Description

Tipped Arrow is a vanilla Minecraft projectile added in Java Edition 1.9 (Combat Update, 2016) that delivers a status effect on hit. Tipped Arrow is crafted by surrounding one Lingering Potion with eight regular Arrows in a crafting table, yielding eight Tipped Arrows that inherit the lingering potion's effect at roughly 1/8 of its duration. Tipped Arrow supports every brewable lingering effect, including Poison, Weakness, Slowness, Harming, Healing, Fire Resistance, Strength, Swiftness, Night Vision, Water Breathing, Invisibility, Leaping, Regeneration, Slow Falling, and Turtle Master. Tipped Arrow can be fired from any Bow or Crossbow on Java and Bedrock since version 1.14, and Tipped Arrow is always consumed on use because Infinity does not apply to it. Players use Tipped Arrow for PvP crowd control, mob suppression, and ranged support, while Wandering Traders occasionally sell limited Tipped Arrow variants in survival worlds.

Guide

How to craft Tipped Arrow in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Brew an Awkward Potion

Place a Nether Wart and a Water Bottle in a Brewing Stand to create the base Awkward Potion needed for any Tipped Arrow effect.

  2. 2

    Add the effect ingredient

Brew the chosen ingredient (e.g. Spider Eye for Poison, Glistering Melon for Healing) into the Awkward Potion to make a standard Potion.

  3. 3

    Convert to Splash, then Lingering

Brew Gunpowder into the Potion to make a Splash Potion, then brew Dragon's Breath into the Splash Potion to produce a Lingering Potion.

  4. 4

    Craft 8 Tipped Arrows

Place the Lingering Potion in the center of a 3x3 crafting grid and surround it with 8 regular Arrows to receive 8 Tipped Arrows of that effect.

  5. 5

    Fire with Bow or Crossbow

Equip a Bow or Crossbow and shoot the Tipped Arrow; the effect applies for roughly 1/8 of the lingering potion's full duration.

Tip

Infinity does not work with Tipped Arrows; each shot consumes one arrow from your inventory even with a maxed-out Bow.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft a Tipped Arrow in Minecraft?

Place 1 Lingering Potion in the center of a 3x3 crafting grid and surround it with 8 Arrows. The recipe outputs 8 Tipped Arrows that inherit the lingering potion's effect.

Does Infinity work with Tipped Arrows?

No. Infinity only affects regular Arrows. Tipped Arrows are always consumed when fired from a Bow, even with Infinity V.

Can a Crossbow shoot Tipped Arrows?

Yes. Since Minecraft 1.14, any Crossbow can fire Tipped Arrows, and Multishot can launch three at once for stronger crowd control.

How long does the effect last on a Tipped Arrow?

The applied status effect lasts roughly 1/8 of the source Lingering Potion's duration, so longer brewed potions create stronger arrows.

Where else can Tipped Arrows be obtained?

Wandering Traders occasionally sell tipped variants, and some are available in the Creative inventory; bartering and drops vary by Minecraft version.
