Description

Splash Potion is brewed by adding gunpowder to any finished potion at a brewing stand. The gunpowder converts the drinkable bottle into a throwable projectile that shatters on contact with a solid surface or an entity. On impact, Splash Potion forms a small effect cloud and applies the potion's effect to every entity inside the radius, including the thrower if standing close, although thrown timed effects last only about three-quarters of the drinkable version's duration.

Splash Potion is the format players use to apply effects to others rather than only to themselves. A Splash Potion of Healing damages undead mobs such as zombies and skeletons because their healing is inverted, while a Potion of Harming heals the undead instead. Slowness and Weakness variants anchor PvP kits and zombie-villager curing, and adding dragon's breath turns a Splash Potion into a Lingering Potion that leaves a persistent cloud. A splash water bottle, brewed with no effect ingredient, extinguishes fire on entities and damages endermen, blazes, and striders.

How to make and use a Splash Potion in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Set up a brewing stand

Build a brewing stand from three cobblestone and one blaze rod, then add blaze powder to the fuel slot to power the brewing process.

  2. 2

    Brew a base potion

Place a water bottle in a bottom slot with nether wart on top to make an Awkward Potion, then add an effect ingredient such as magma cream for Fire Resistance or a glistering melon for Healing.

  3. 3

    Add gunpowder

Return the finished potion to the stand and place gunpowder in the top slot. The gunpowder converts each bottle into a Splash Potion without changing its effect.

  4. 4

    Throw it at a target

Equip the Splash Potion and use it to throw the bottle. It breaks where it lands and applies the effect to all entities in roughly a 4x4 area, including you if you are close.

Tip

Add redstone dust before the gunpowder to extend the effect, or glowstone dust to strengthen it. Thrown potions keep only about 75% of the drinkable duration, while instant effects like Healing and Harming are not reduced.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a Splash Potion in Minecraft?

Add one gunpowder to any finished potion in a brewing stand. The gunpowder turns the drinkable bottle into a throwable Splash Potion while keeping its original effect.

Does a Splash Potion affect the player who throws it?

Yes. A Splash Potion applies its effect to every entity in the splash radius, so the thrower is affected too if they stand close to the impact point.

Why does a Splash Potion of Healing hurt zombies?

Undead mobs like zombies, skeletons, and husks have their healing inverted, so a Splash Potion of Healing damages them while a Potion of Harming heals them.

What does a Splash Water Bottle do?

A splash water bottle is brewed without an effect ingredient. When thrown, it extinguishes fire on entities and damages endermen, blazes, and striders.

How is a Splash Potion different from a Lingering Potion?

A Splash Potion applies its effect once on impact, while a Lingering Potion, made by adding dragon's breath to a Splash Potion, leaves a cloud that affects entities over several seconds.

Does throwing a potion reduce its duration?

Yes. A Splash Potion's timed effects last about three-quarters of the drinkable version's duration, though instant effects such as Healing and Harming are unaffected.
