Compact storage block crafted from nine wheat that feeds and heals horses and llamas, reduces fall damage, and serves as a decoration in farm builds.

Description

Hay Bale is crafted from nine wheat in a 3×3 grid and reversed back to nine wheat by placing it in a crafting slot. Horses, donkeys, mules, and llamas fed a hay bale restore 20 health points; one bale also speeds up foal growth by three minutes and baby llama growth by 90 seconds. For healing these animals no food is more efficient — but breeding horses requires golden carrots or golden apples, not hay.

Falling onto a hay bale reduces fall damage by 80%, making it a useful emergency landing pad — though not a full negation like a slime block. The 80% reduction means falling from extreme heights still deals damage.

Hay bales are primarily a compact wheat storage solution: nine wheat per block saves inventory space when transporting large quantities. In decoration they appear in barn builds, harvest festival scenes, and rustic farm aesthetics. They also naturally generate in villages as part of farm plots and some house interiors, alongside other agricultural blocks.

How to craft and use a Hay Bale in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the hay bale

Fill a 3×3 crafting grid with nine wheat to make one Hay Bale; placing a single hay bale in the grid converts it back into nine wheat.

  2. 2

    Feed and heal animals

Feed a hay bale to a horse, donkey, or mule to restore 20 health and speed up foal growth; llamas eat hay bales to heal and enter love mode for breeding.

  3. 3

    Break a long fall

Land on a hay bale to take only 20% of the fall damage; stacking is not needed, but extreme drops still deal damage.

  4. 4

    Build a target block

Place one hay bale in the center of a 3×3 grid and four redstone dust above, below, and beside it to craft a target block for redstone projects.

  5. 5

    Decorate farms

Place hay bales along an axis to change the stripe direction for barns, harvest scenes, and rustic farm builds.

Important

Hay bales are flammable and catch fire from flames and spreading fire, though lava does not ignite them directly. They breed llamas but do NOT breed horses — use golden carrots or golden apples for horse breeding.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a hay bale?

Place nine wheat in a 3×3 crafting grid. One hay bale converts back into nine wheat, making it compact wheat storage.

Do hay bales reduce fall damage?

Yes. Landing on a hay bale cuts fall damage by 80%, so you take only one-fifth of normal damage, though very high falls can still hurt.

Can hay bales breed llamas?

Yes. Hay bales are the only food that breeds llamas and also heals them; horses, donkeys, and mules eat them to restore 20 health.

Are hay bales flammable?

Yes. Hay bales are flammable and burn from fire and spreading flames, though lava does not ignite them directly, so keep them away from fire sources.

Where do hay bales generate naturally?

Hay bales appear in village farm plots and some house interiors, especially in plains and savanna villages.

What can you craft with hay bales?

One hay bale surrounded by four redstone dust in a crafting grid makes a target block; otherwise hay bales mainly store wheat and feed animals.
