Description

Golden Horse Armor is an equippable item in Minecraft that protects a tamed horse, granting 7 armor points — more than Iron Horse Armor (5) and less than Diamond Horse Armor (11). It cannot be crafted at a crafting table; players obtain it only as loot from generated chests in dungeons, desert temples, jungle temples, Nether fortresses, and End cities. To use it, open the horse's inventory and place the armor in the dedicated armor slot, or fire it from a dispenser aimed at the horse. Golden Horse Armor has no durability, so it never wears out or breaks no matter how much damage the horse absorbs. It fits only horses — donkeys and mules cannot wear armor and instead carry a chest. Introduced in Java Edition 1.6.1, the item uses the id minecraft:golden_horse_armor and behaves identically in Bedrock Edition. Beyond protection, its gold barding is a popular cosmetic choice for decorating a favourite mount.

How to get and use Golden Horse Armor in Minecraft

    Loot it from a chest

    Golden Horse Armor cannot be crafted. Explore dungeons, desert temples, jungle temples, Nether fortresses, and End cities, and open their chests until one drops the armor.

    Tame a horse

    Repeatedly mount a wild horse with an empty hand until hearts appear, confirming it is tamed. Only tamed horses can wear armor.

    Open the horse inventory

    While riding or standing next to the tamed horse, press the inventory key (or sneak and use the horse) to open its equipment screen with the armor slot.

    Equip the armor

    Drag the Golden Horse Armor into the armor slot. The horse instantly gains 7 armor points and visibly wears the gold barding.

    Or use a dispenser

    Alternatively, place the armor in a dispenser facing the horse and power it with redstone to equip the mount automatically.

Important

Horse armor fits only horses. Donkeys and mules cannot wear it and carry a chest instead. The armor has no durability and never needs repair.
