Description

Copper Pickaxe is the mid-tier mining tool added to Minecraft in Java Edition 1.21.9 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.100, carved into the tool progression directly between stone and iron. Forged from 3 copper ingots and 2 sticks on a crafting table, Copper Pickaxe runs at mining level 1 with an efficiency of 5, breaking stone and ore blocks noticeably faster than a stone pickaxe yet slower than iron. The durability of 190 uses in Java Edition (191 in Bedrock Edition) outlasts stone but stops short of iron's 250, and Copper Pickaxe harvests copper, iron, and lapis lazuli ores while refusing redstone, gold, diamond, emerald, netherite, and obsidian.

Because copper is renewable (drowned zombies drop copper ingots), Copper Pickaxe is itself a renewable tool — the first new renewable pickaxe since netherite. Copper Pickaxe accepts standard pickaxe enchantments such as Efficiency, Unbreaking, Fortune, and Silk Touch at an enchantability of 13, slightly above iron. In combat Copper Pickaxe deals 3 damage per hit in Java Edition and 4 damage in Bedrock Edition. Two damaged pickaxes combine in a crafting grid or grindstone, and each copper ingot spent at an anvil restores 47 durability, making Copper Pickaxe a sensible bridge tool for early-game miners before iron is plentiful.

Java Edition Guide

How to craft and use a Copper Pickaxe in Minecraft

  1. 1

Gather 3 copper ingots and 2 sticks

Smelt raw copper mined from copper ore in a furnace to obtain 3 copper ingots, and craft 2 planks into 4 sticks so the Copper Pickaxe recipe has both ingredients ready.

  2. 2

    Open the 3x3 crafting grid

Right-click a crafting table to open the expanded 3x3 grid, because a Copper Pickaxe cannot be made in the 2x2 inventory crafting grid.

  3. 3

    Place the copper and sticks

Put the 3 copper ingots across the top row, then place one stick in the center square and one stick directly below it, and one Copper Pickaxe appears in the result slot.

  4. 4

    Mine stone-tier ores

Use the Copper Pickaxe to harvest copper, iron, and lapis lazuli ores at mining level 1 and speed 5, while remembering it cannot mine diamond, gold, redstone, emerald, netherite, or obsidian.

  5. 5

    Repair with copper ingots

When durability drops, combine two damaged Copper Pickaxes in a crafting grid or restore 47 durability per copper ingot at an anvil to keep mining without forging a new tool.

Edition differences

Copper Pickaxe has a durability of 190 in Java Edition and 191 in Bedrock Edition, and deals 3 attack damage in Java versus 4 in Bedrock, so the same tool behaves slightly differently across editions.
