Charcoal
Charcoal is the renewable coal substitute smelted from any log in a furnace (farmable forever by replanting trees) — one piece smelts 8 items and crafts torches.
Description
Charcoal crafts torches (1 Charcoal plus 1 stick yields 4 torches), campfires, soul campfires, and fire charges, covering nearly every early-game lighting and cooking need. The one limitation is that Charcoal cannot be compressed into a Block of Coal and cannot be sold to villagers, unlike mined Coal. Charcoal also will not stack together with Coal in the same inventory slot despite the near-identical texture, so keep the slightly browner Charcoal separate when sorting fuel.

How to make and use Charcoal in Minecraft
-
1
Gather logs
Chop any tree with an axe or by hand to collect Oak, Spruce, Birch, Jungle, Acacia, Dark Oak, Mangrove, or Cherry logs.
-
2
Open a furnace
Place a furnace and right-click it, then put the logs in the top input slot.
-
3
Add a fuel source
Put any fuel — planks, sticks, or an existing piece of Charcoal — in the bottom slot to start smelting.
-
4
Collect the Charcoal
Wait about 10 seconds per log; each log smelts into one Charcoal that you drag into your inventory.
Charcoal has existed since the early days of Minecraft and behaves identically in Java and Bedrock Edition.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft Charcoal?
Charcoal cannot be crafted on a grid. Charcoal is made only by smelting a log or wood block in a furnace, blast furnace, or smoker.
Is Charcoal better than Coal?
Charcoal and Coal smelt the same 8 items per piece. Charcoal is renewable from trees, but only Coal can be crafted into a Block of Coal or sold to villagers.
Can you stack Charcoal with Coal?
No. Charcoal and Coal occupy separate inventory slots and never combine, even though their textures look almost the same.
What can you make with Charcoal?
Charcoal crafts torches, campfires, soul campfires, and fire charges, and it works as furnace fuel for 80 seconds per piece.
Is Charcoal renewable?
Yes. Charcoal is fully renewable because trees regrow from saplings, letting you farm unlimited logs to smelt into Charcoal.
