Description

Carrot on a Stick is a Minecraft control item used to ride and steer a saddled pig. You craft it from one fishing rod and one carrot, and holding it while sitting on a saddled pig makes the pig walk toward wherever you look. Right-clicking triggers a speed boost lasting 7 to 49 seconds, but each boost wears the item down: Carrot on a Stick has 25 durability points in Java Edition and 26 in Bedrock Edition, and a single boost costs 7 durability in Java Edition or 2 in Bedrock Edition, so a fresh item manages only three boosts in Java Edition. When durability runs out, Carrot on a Stick turns back into a fishing rod instead of disappearing. It was added in Java Edition 1.4.2, the Pretty Scary Update, and works the same way in Bedrock Edition. The item cannot be eaten and does not stack, because it carries durability like a tool. Combining a worn fishing rod with a carrot still produces a fresh Carrot on a Stick, so the recipe also recycles damaged rods. For travelling on a Strider in the Nether, use the related Warped Fungus on a Stick instead. Pigs also follow a player holding carrots, but Carrot on a Stick remains the only way to steer a pig while riding it, making it a fun early-game mount control.

    Craft a fishing rod from three sticks and two string, then harvest one carrot from a village farm or loot one from a pillager outpost chest.

    Place the fishing rod in the top-right slot and the carrot in the center slot of a crafting table to make one Carrot on a Stick.

    Saddle a pig

    Right-click a pig with a saddle; since Java Edition 1.21.6 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 a saddle crafts from three leather and one iron ingot, and a ravager always drops one.

    Ride and steer the pig

    Mount the saddled pig while holding the Carrot on a Stick, then guide it by looking toward where you want to go.

    Boost speed when needed

    Right-click to make the pig dash forward for 7 to 49 seconds; each boost costs 7 durability in Java Edition or 2 in Bedrock Edition, and at zero durability the item turns back into a fishing rod.

Durability tip

A fresh Carrot on a Stick survives only three boosts in Java Edition; an anvil can apply Unbreaking or Mending, and two worn ones combine in a crafting grid for the sum of their durability plus one point.
