How to farm and use a Carrot in Minecraft
-
1
Get your first carrot
Carrots have no seed item. Find them on village farm plots, inside village chests, or as a rare drop from killed zombies, husks, and zombie villagers.
-
2
Plant on farmland
Hoe dirt or grass into farmland next to water, then right-click the tilled soil with a carrot to plant it. Keep a light level of 9 or higher so the crop keeps growing.
-
3
Grow and harvest
The plant passes through 8 growth stages; speed it up with bone meal. Breaking a fully grown crop drops 2 to 5 carrots, and a Fortune III hoe raises the average to about 5.
-
4
Eat or upgrade it
Eat a carrot raw to restore 3 hunger points, or craft a golden carrot from 1 carrot and 8 gold nuggets for high saturation and night vision potions.
-
5
Breed and steer animals
Hold a carrot to lead and breed pigs and rabbits, and combine a carrot with a fishing rod to make a carrot on a stick for steering saddled pigs.
Farmer villagers buy carrots for emeralds, so a large carrot field doubles as a renewable emerald source.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft a carrot in Minecraft?
No. Carrots cannot be crafted; you obtain them from village farms, village chests, or zombie drops, then replant them on farmland to grow more.
How many carrots does one crop drop?
A fully grown carrot crop drops 2 to 5 carrots. Harvesting with a Fortune III tool raises the average yield to about 5 per plant.
How do you make a golden carrot?
Place 1 carrot in the center of the crafting grid surrounded by 8 gold nuggets to craft one golden carrot.
What animals eat carrots?
Pigs and rabbits follow and breed when you hold a carrot, so carrots are the main breeding food on pig and rabbit farms.
Does a carrot work the same in Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Planting, the 8 growth stages, golden carrot crafting, and animal breeding all behave the same in Java and Bedrock Edition.
