Description

Cake is crafted from three milk buckets, two sugar, one egg, and three wheat. The empty buckets return after crafting, but the recipe still requires access to cows, chickens, farming, and sugar cane or honey. Unlike most foods, it must be placed as a block before eating. Players then consume it slice by slice until only crumbs remain.

The block is useful for parties, kitchens, birthday rooms, server events, and compact food stations where several players can share one placed item. It cannot be picked back up normally after placement, so location matters. Redstone builders also use comparators to read how many slices remain, turning dessert into a small signal source.

Guide

How to craft and use Cake in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather crafting materials

Collect 3 milk buckets (fill iron buckets from any cow), 2 sugar (crafted from sugar cane), 1 egg (dropped by chickens), and 3 wheat (grown from seeds). All 8 ingredients are required — no substitutes exist.

  2. 2

    Craft the Cake

Arrange the ingredients in a crafting table: milk buckets across the top row, sugar in the left and right middle slots, egg in the center, and wheat across the bottom row. After crafting, your 3 empty buckets return to your inventory.

  3. 3

Place the Cake as a block

Cake cannot be eaten from the inventory. Right-click any solid surface to place it as a block, then right-click the placed Cake to eat one slice and restore 2 hunger points. Each Cake has 7 slices.

  4. 4

    Share with other players

Multiple players can eat from the same placed Cake. This makes it useful for server events, communal kitchens, and party builds where one block feeds a group.

  5. 5

Use a comparator for redstone signals

Place a redstone comparator adjacent to the Cake block. The comparator outputs a signal from 14 (full Cake, 7 slices) down to 2 (1 slice remaining). Eating slices changes the signal, enabling slice-counting redstone circuits.

Warning

Once placed, Cake cannot be picked back up — breaking it destroys the block without dropping an item. Choose its location carefully before placing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you eat Cake directly from your inventory in Minecraft?

No. Cake must be placed on a solid block first. Right-click the placed Cake to eat one slice at a time, restoring 2 hunger points per slice.

How many slices does a Cake have?

A full Cake has 7 slices. Each slice restores 2 hunger points, so a complete Cake provides 14 hunger points total.

Does breaking a Cake drop it as an item?

No. Breaking a placed Cake destroys it completely without dropping anything. The only exception is using Silk Touch, which is not available for Cake — it simply cannot be recovered once placed.

How do I use a Cake with redstone?

Place a redstone comparator next to a Cake block. The comparator reads the number of remaining slices and outputs a signal strength from 14 (7 slices) down to 2 (1 slice), decreasing by 2 for each slice eaten.

Can multiple players eat from the same Cake?

Yes. Any player who right-clicks a placed Cake consumes one slice. This makes Cake one of the few shareable food sources in Minecraft, ideal for group events.

What is the most expensive ingredient in a Cake recipe?

Practically speaking, the three milk buckets require iron for the buckets and access to cows. The buckets themselves are returned after crafting, but the iron investment is the main early-game bottleneck.
