Description

Wooden Pickaxe is the entry-level mining tool in Minecraft, crafted from 3 wooden planks of any type across the top row and 2 sticks down the center column of a crafting table. Wooden Pickaxe belongs to the wood tier — the lowest of the five tiers — with 59 uses of durability and the slowest mining speed of any pickaxe. Wooden Pickaxe can harvest stone, cobblestone, coal ore, sandstone, and nether quartz ore, but breaking iron, gold, diamond, redstone, lapis, or emerald ore with it yields no drop.

Wooden Pickaxe exists to bootstrap the tool progression: mine cobblestone with it, then craft a Stone Pickaxe to reach iron. Wooden Pickaxe accepts enchantments such as Efficiency, Unbreaking, Fortune, and Silk Touch, and can also be burned as furnace fuel, smelting one item per pickaxe. Because Wooden Pickaxe deals only 2 attack damage and wears out after 59 blocks, most players replace it within the first few minutes of a survival world.

How to craft and use a Wooden Pickaxe in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather wood and make planks

Punch a tree for logs, then craft each log into 4 planks in your inventory grid.

  2. 2

    Craft sticks

Place 2 planks vertically to make 4 sticks, the handle for the pickaxe.

  3. 3

    Open a crafting table

Place and right-click a crafting table to access the full 3x3 grid the pickaxe recipe needs.

  4. 4

    Build the pickaxe

Fill the top row with 3 planks and the center column below with 2 sticks to craft 1 Wooden Pickaxe.

  5. 5

    Mine stone-tier blocks

Use the Wooden Pickaxe on stone and coal ore, then upgrade to a Stone Pickaxe to mine iron.

Mining limit

A Wooden Pickaxe cannot collect iron, gold, diamond, redstone, lapis, or emerald ore — those blocks drop nothing unless you use a stone pickaxe or better.
