Description

Wooden Hoe is the cheapest farming tool in Minecraft, crafted from two planks and two sticks to till dirt into farmland for crops. Right-click a grass block, dirt, coarse dirt, or a dirt path to turn it into farmland, then plant wheat, carrots, potatoes, or beetroot. With only 59 durability it is the most fragile hoe tier, so most players craft it just for the early game before upgrading to a stone or iron hoe. Since Java Edition 1.16.2 and on Bedrock, the wooden hoe also doubles as the fastest tool for breaking leaves, hay bales, target blocks, dried kelp blocks, sponge, moss blocks, and nether wart blocks. You can enchant it with Efficiency, Unbreaking, Fortune, Silk Touch, and Mending at an enchanting table or anvil. A wooden hoe can even be burned as furnace fuel, smelting one item. It works identically in both Java and Bedrock Edition.

How to use a Wooden Hoe in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the wooden hoe

Place two planks in the top-left and top-center cells of the crafting grid, then two sticks in the center and bottom-center cells to make one wooden hoe.

  2. 2

    Select dirt or grass

Stand next to a grass block, dirt, coarse dirt, or dirt path block so it is within reach.

  3. 3

    Till the ground

Right-click the block (or tap it on Bedrock) with the hoe to convert it into farmland.

  4. 4

    Plant your crop

Hold seeds, carrots, potatoes, or beetroot and right-click the farmland to plant them, then keep water within four blocks to stay hydrated.

Important

Farmland reverts to dirt if you jump on it or if no water is within four blocks; the wooden hoe only lasts 59 uses before breaking.
