Description

Wooden Axe is the starter chopping tool in Minecraft, crafted from three wooden planks and two sticks for a tool with 59 durability — the lowest of any axe tier. Wooden Axe breaks logs, planks, doors, fences, chests, and other wood-based blocks faster than by hand at a mining speed of 2.0, which makes Wooden Axe the first tool most players build after the Crafting Table. Any plank type works in the recipe, so Wooden Axe can be made from oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, or bamboo planks.

Beyond chopping, Wooden Axe right-clicks a log to strip it into the stripped variant and scrapes oxidation and wax off copper blocks. As a weapon Wooden Axe deals 7 attack damage in Java Edition with a slow swing, and Wooden Axe can disable a player's shield for 5 seconds — a melee advantage swords lack. Because Wooden Axe wears out after 59 uses, most players treat Wooden Axe as a throwaway early-game tool and upgrade to a Stone Axe as soon as cobblestone is available.
