Description

White Stained Glass is the white variant of stained glass — a dyed glass block crafted by surrounding 1 white dye with 8 glass blocks on a crafting table, producing 8 blocks per craft. White Stained Glass is transparent, emits no light, never catches fire from lava, and stacks to 64. White Stained Glass also generates naturally in the atriums of trial chambers alongside black stained glass. Hardness 0.3 and blast resistance 0.3 leave stained glass fragile: White Stained Glass breaks in about 0.45 seconds with any tool or a bare hand, because stained glass has no assigned tool. Only the Silk Touch enchantment (a tool enchantment that makes delicate blocks drop themselves) recovers a broken block; without Silk Touch, White Stained Glass drops nothing.

Builders choose White Stained Glass for bright window walls, skylights, and greenhouse roofs. Mobs cannot normally spawn on stained glass, and mobs treat stained glass as completely opaque, so monsters cannot see players behind a White Stained Glass window. Six White Stained Glass blocks crafted in two rows of three yield 16 white stained glass panes for thinner window frames. A single White Stained Glass craft costs 8 glass blocks and 1 white dye, so a large curtain-wall project needs a furnace line smelting sand into glass. Stock spare White Stained Glass blocks before building: a block broken without Silk Touch drops nothing, and every misplaced block is lost glass.

Guide

How to Craft White Stained Glass in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Smelt sand into glass

Place sand or red sand in a furnace: one sand block smelts into one glass block.

  2. 2

    Make white dye

Craft white dye from bone meal or from a lily of the valley flower on the crafting grid.

  3. 3

    Craft the stained glass

Place 8 glass blocks around 1 white dye on the crafting table grid — the recipe produces 8 White Stained Glass blocks.

  4. 4

    Turn surplus into panes

Arrange 6 White Stained Glass blocks in two rows of three to craft 16 white stained glass panes for thin windows.

  5. 5

Recover placed blocks with Silk Touch

Break placed White Stained Glass only with a Silk Touch tool; without the enchantment the block drops nothing.

Torch support

Torches can be placed directly on stained glass, so White Stained Glass holds a torch without extra support blocks.

Frequently asked questions

Is White Stained Glass renewable?

Yes. Sand smelts into glass and white dye comes from bone meal or lilies of the valley, so every ingredient of White Stained Glass is renewable.

Can redstone be placed on White Stained Glass?

Yes. Redstone dust and redstone components can be placed on stained glass, but the glass itself cannot be powered.

Why does a wall of White Stained Glass look like one sheet?

Stained glass blocks next to identical glass hide the borders between the blocks, so a run of White Stained Glass reads as a single sheet.

How do I recover placed White Stained Glass?

Break the block with a Silk Touch tool; White Stained Glass broken without Silk Touch drops nothing.

Does White Stained Glass affect beacon beams?

Yes. White Stained Glass placed above a beacon turns the beam white, and layering white over red stained glass produces pink shades.
