Wet Sponge is a water-soaked sponge from ocean monuments that must be smelted dry before it can soak up water again.

Description

Wet Sponge is a sponge block that has soaked up water and can no longer absorb more until it dries out. In Minecraft it generates inside the sponge rooms of ocean monuments, and an Elder Guardian always drops one Wet Sponge when it is killed by a player. To make it useful again you dry it: smelt the Wet Sponge in a furnace with any fuel to get a regular Sponge back, and an empty bucket left in the fuel slot fills with water during the process in both Java and Bedrock Edition. Placing a Wet Sponge anywhere in the Nether instantly dries it into a dry Sponge with a puff of steam particles. A dry Sponge absorbs water up to 6 blocks away (taxicab distance, 7 counting its own space) and never more than 118 water blocks, nearest first, and turns wet again, so players cycle the same block to drain flooded mines, tunnels, and monument builds. Wet Sponge is mined fastest with a hoe and always drops itself. It exists in both Java and Bedrock Edition and became functional in the Java Edition 1.8 update.

How to dry a Wet Sponge in Minecraft

    Get a Wet Sponge

    Loot a sponge room inside an ocean monument or kill an Elder Guardian — killed by a player, it always drops one Wet Sponge.

    Smelt it in a furnace

    Place the Wet Sponge in a furnace with any fuel to turn it back into a dry Sponge; smokers and campfires only cook food and cannot dry sponges.

    Catch the water

    Put an empty bucket in the furnace fuel slot before smelting; it fills with a water bucket when the sponge dries, in both Java and Bedrock Edition.

    Or dry it in the Nether

    Place the Wet Sponge on any block in the Nether and it instantly converts to a dry Sponge with steam particles.

    Reuse to remove water

    Place the dry Sponge near water to absorb up to 6 blocks away (taxicab distance), at most 118 water blocks; it becomes wet again and can be dried once more.

Important

A Wet Sponge cannot absorb water until it is dried. Sponges are mined fastest with a hoe and always drop themselves.
