How to Make Waxed Lightning Rod in Minecraft
Waxed Lightning Rod
Waxed Lightning Rod attracts natural lightning strikes during thunderstorms, and the honeycomb wax coating keeps the copper from ever oxidizing (turning green).
Description
In practice, Waxed Lightning Rod protects wooden structures from thunderstorm fires: a redirected strike can only ignite blocks within a two-block radius of the air block above the rod, while the rod itself and the supporting block never catch fire. A strike makes Waxed Lightning Rod emit a redstone pulse at level 15 for 8 game ticks (0.4 seconds) and strongly powers the block the rod is mounted on. During a thunderstorm, a trident enchanted with Channeling can strike a Waxed Lightning Rod on demand. An axe scrapes the wax off and leaves a plain Lightning Rod that starts oxidizing again. Copper roofs, tall towers and wooden ranch houses usually carry a Waxed Lightning Rod on the ridge: the copper accent stays orange forever, and lightning keeps away from the walls.

How to Craft and Use a Waxed Lightning Rod in Minecraft
-
1
Craft the base Lightning Rod
Place three Copper Ingots in a vertical column on the crafting grid to make one Lightning Rod.
-
2
Wax the rod with Honeycomb
Combine the Lightning Rod and one Honeycomb on the crafting grid in any arrangement to get one Waxed Lightning Rod; using a Honeycomb directly on a placed Lightning Rod works too.
-
3
Place the rod under open sky
Mount the Waxed Lightning Rod on a roof or tower top: in Java Edition any non-air block above the rod blocks diversion, in Bedrock Edition any block with a collision box does, and the rod must be the highest block in its column.
-
4
Catch a strike during a thunderstorm
Natural lightning hits the Waxed Lightning Rod from up to 128 blocks away in Java Edition and 64 blocks in Bedrock Edition; during a thunderstorm, a trident enchanted with Channeling thrown at the rod forces a strike.
-
5
Mine the rod with a stone pickaxe
Break the Waxed Lightning Rod with a stone pickaxe or better; a weaker tool destroys the block and drops nothing.
A lightning strike can set flammable blocks on fire within a two-block radius of the air block above the Waxed Lightning Rod, so keep flammable materials out of that zone. The Waxed Lightning Rod itself and the block underneath never catch fire.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Waxed Lightning Rod oxidize like plain copper?
No. The honeycomb wax locks the copper in its unoxidized state for good; only non-waxed lightning rods pass through the oxidation stages that end in a teal color.
Can the wax be removed from a Waxed Lightning Rod?
Yes. Scraping the Waxed Lightning Rod with an axe strips the wax away and leaves a regular Lightning Rod that starts oxidizing again over time.
Do mobs take damage when lightning hits a Waxed Lightning Rod?
Yes. Lightning redirected into a Waxed Lightning Rod damages mobs inside a 6×12×6 volume centered four blocks above the bottom of the rod.
Does a Waxed Lightning Rod divert every Channeling trident strike?
No. A Channeling trident strikes the Waxed Lightning Rod only when the trident itself hits the rod; lightning aimed at an entity or summoned by commands is never diverted.
Is the Waxed Lightning Rod renewable?
Yes. Lightning rods are a renewable block, and the waxing step adds only a single Honeycomb to the recipe.
