Description

Waxed Copper Chest is the non-oxidizing variant of the copper chest, a storage block family added to Minecraft in The Copper Age drop (Java 1.21.9). A Waxed Copper Chest works almost identically to a wooden chest: the container provides 27 item slots, two copper chests placed side by side merge into a large copper chest with 54 slots, the block stacks to 64, and copper chests neither burn nor get destroyed by lava. The honeycomb wax changes exactly one thing: oxidation (the slow weathering of copper to green) never begins, so the surface keeps its natural copper color indefinitely.

A copper golem without an item visits up to 10 copper chests in a row and takes up to 16 of the first item to store in nearby wooden chests, and waxing does not stop the golem. Piglins turn hostile toward a player who opens or breaks a copper chest. Pistons cannot move copper chests in Java Edition. Choose Waxed Copper Chest for copper storage halls and copper-themed builds where green spots must never appear.

Guide

How to get a Waxed Copper Chest in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft a copper chest first

Place 1 chest in the center of a crafting grid and fill the remaining 8 cells with copper ingots; the recipe outputs 1 Copper Chest.

  2. 2

    Wax the copper chest

Combine 1 Copper Chest with 1 honeycomb in a crafting grid, or use the honeycomb directly on the placed chest; either way yields 1 Waxed Copper Chest at the chest's current oxidation stage.

  3. 3

    Place and load the chest

Place the Waxed Copper Chest and open it to use 27 storage slots; a second waxed copper chest placed next to it merges into a large chest with 54 slots.

  4. 4

Break the chest with the right tool

Mine the Waxed Copper Chest with a stone pickaxe or better to collect the block; any other item drops only the stored contents.

What wax does not fix

Waxed Copper Chest never turns green, but a copper golem still pulls up to 16 items from waxed chests into wooden chests, and Piglins turn hostile when a copper chest is opened or broken.

Frequently asked questions

Can you find a Waxed Copper Chest in the world?

Natural generation produces only oxidized copper chests, and the chest created together with a copper golem is never waxed. Honeycomb is the only source of the wax coating.

Does a Waxed Copper Chest turn green over time?

The honeycomb wax blocks oxidation completely. An unwaxed copper chest passes through four stages, from natural copper to teal with green spots.

What happens when the chest is broken without a pickaxe?

The chest itself drops nothing and only the contents fall out. Collecting the Waxed Copper Chest block requires a stone pickaxe or better.

Do two Waxed Copper Chests form a large chest?

Two adjacent copper chests merge into a large chest with 54 slots. The large chest stays waxed only when both halves are waxed.

How many items does a copper golem take from a waxed chest?

A copper golem takes up to 16 of the first item per visit and checks up to 10 copper chests in a row, storing everything in nearby wooden chests.

Do Piglins react to copper chests?

Piglins become hostile toward a player who opens or breaks a copper chest, waxed variants included.
