Sunflower
Sunflower is a tall double-height flower exclusive to a rare plains variant, always facing east, crafted into two yellow dye.
Description
One of its most notable properties is that sunflower always faces east, regardless of the player's orientation when placing it. This makes it a useful natural compass: stand so the flower head is directly in your field of view, and you are facing east. This property has no attached game mechanic but is widely used in survival navigation.
Breaking either block drops the sunflower plant itself; crafting one sunflower then yields two yellow dye, twice the single dye from one dandelion, making it efficient for large-scale dye production. Yellow dye recolors wool, terracotta, concrete powder, glass, beds, shulker boxes, candles, and leather armor.
Bone meal applied to a sunflower does not grow the plant further but instead spawns a new specimen nearby. The flower can be used in a composter for composting progress.

How to find and use a Sunflower in Minecraft
-
1
Locate the sunflower plains
Explore plains regions until you reach the sunflower plains biome. Sunflowers generate there in large patches and appear naturally nowhere else.
-
2
Use the sunflower as a compass
Look at the sunflower's face — it always points east. Stand behind the stem facing the flower head to confirm you are heading east without a real compass.
-
3
Harvest yellow dye
Break either half of the sunflower with any tool or your bare hand to collect the sunflower, then craft it into two yellow dye.
-
4
Duplicate sunflowers with bone meal
Use bone meal directly on a placed sunflower to drop a copy of the flower as an item, giving you a renewable supply of yellow dye and decoration.
Sunflower was added in Java Edition 1.7.2 and exists in both Java and Bedrock Edition. In both editions the flower always faces east, and bone meal on a placed sunflower yields a duplicate flower item.

Frequently asked questions
Where do sunflowers spawn in Minecraft?
Sunflowers generate only in the sunflower plains biome, a rare variant of the plains. They do not appear in regular plains or any other biome naturally.
Which direction does a sunflower face?
A sunflower always faces east regardless of how you place it, so players use it as a natural compass to find east without a real compass.
How much yellow dye does a sunflower give?
Crafting one sunflower yields two yellow dye — twice the single dye you get from one dandelion — making sunflowers efficient for mass dye production. Breaking the plant drops the sunflower itself.
Can you grow more sunflowers with bone meal?
Yes. Using bone meal on a placed sunflower drops a duplicate sunflower as an item, so sunflowers are a renewable resource.
Can a sunflower be composted?
Yes, a sunflower can be placed in a composter and has a chance to raise the compost level toward producing bone meal.
When was the sunflower added to Minecraft?
The sunflower was added in Java Edition 1.7.2, the Update that Changed the World, alongside the sunflower plains biome.
