Description

Stone Pickaxe is the second tier in Minecraft's pickaxe progression, crafted from 3 cobblestone across the top row and 2 sticks down the centre column of the crafting grid. Stone Pickaxe has 131 durability and a mining speed of 4, roughly twice as fast as a Wooden Pickaxe. Since the Nether and deepslate updates, Stone Pickaxe can also be crafted from blackstone or cobbled deepslate, which behave identically to cobblestone in the recipe.

Stone Pickaxe is the first tool able to mine iron ore, lapis lazuli ore, and other stone-tier blocks, making it the gateway to upgrading toward iron gear. Stone Pickaxe still cannot mine gold, redstone, diamond, or emerald ore — those require an Iron Pickaxe or better, and breaking them with a Stone Pickaxe drops nothing. Most survival players craft a Stone Pickaxe within their first minutes underground, since cobblestone is far cheaper than wood and the tool mines fast enough to clear early caves before switching to iron.

How to craft and use a Stone Pickaxe in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather 3 cobblestone

Mine stone blocks with a Wooden Pickaxe; each one drops a single cobblestone.

  2. 2

    Make 2 sticks

Place 2 planks vertically in the crafting grid to get 4 sticks, then keep 2 for the pickaxe.

  3. 3

    Craft the Stone Pickaxe

Fill the top row of a crafting table with 3 cobblestone and place 2 sticks in the centre column below.

  4. 4

    Mine iron ore

Use the Stone Pickaxe to break iron and lapis lazuli ore, then smelt the iron to start your gear upgrade.

Tip

Cobbled deepslate and blackstone are drop-in replacements for cobblestone in the recipe since Minecraft 1.17 and 1.16.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft a Stone Pickaxe?

Place 3 cobblestone across the top row of a crafting table and 2 sticks in the centre column to craft one Stone Pickaxe.

Can a Stone Pickaxe mine iron?

Yes. Stone Pickaxe is the lowest tier that can mine iron ore and lapis lazuli ore, but it cannot mine gold, redstone, diamond, or emerald.

How many uses does a Stone Pickaxe have?

Stone Pickaxe has 131 durability, breaking after 131 blocks unless repaired or enchanted with Unbreaking.

Can you mine diamonds with a Stone Pickaxe?

No. Mining diamond ore needs at least an Iron Pickaxe; a Stone Pickaxe breaks the block without dropping any diamonds.
