Description

Smithing Table is crafted from four planks of any wood type and two iron ingots in the standard 2-and-4 pattern. Since the Trails & Tales update (1.20), the device's role expanded significantly. Originally just a simple netherite-upgrade station, it now requires three slots: a smithing template (smithing trim or netherite upgrade), the base item (such as a diamond chestplate), and the upgrade ingredient (a netherite ingot or specific decorative material).

For netherite upgrades the cost is one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template (looted from bastion remnants) plus one netherite ingot per item — and each upgrade consumes the template, so duplicate it beforehand with seven diamonds and one netherrack to turn one template into two. For armour trims, the templates are sourced from various structures and apply decorative patterns to armour pieces using any ingot or gem as the colour. The block also serves as the workstation of the toolsmith villager profession.

Guide

How to upgrade diamond to netherite in Minecraft

  1. 1

Craft or find a Smithing Table

Place two iron ingots in the top row and four planks of any wood type in the bottom two rows of a crafting table to produce one Smithing Table. Smithing Tables also generate naturally inside toolsmith houses in every village type — plains, savanna, desert, taiga, and snowy — as well as in trail ruins.

  2. 2

Obtain a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template

The Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template drops from chests inside bastion remnants in the Nether: the treasure room chest is guaranteed to hold one, while bridge, hoglin stable, and generic chests each have a 10% chance. You need exactly one template per item you want to upgrade, because the template is consumed during the upgrade.

  3. 3

    Gather a netherite ingot

Mine ancient debris in the Nether between Y-levels 8 and 24 — the ore is densest around level 16 — smelt it into netherite scrap, then combine four netherite scrap and four gold ingots in a crafting table to produce one netherite ingot. You need one netherite ingot per item upgraded.

  4. 4

Perform the upgrade at the Smithing Table

Open the Smithing Table and place the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in the left slot, your diamond item in the centre slot, and one netherite ingot in the right slot. The output slot displays the netherite item. The upgrade preserves all existing enchantments and the item's custom name.

  5. 5

    Duplicate Smithing Templates using diamonds

To copy a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, place the template in the top-centre slot of a crafting table, one netherrack block in the centre, and one diamond in each of the seven remaining slots. Each craft produces two templates from one.

Tip

Netherite items are fireproof and float in lava, meaning accidental deaths in the Nether no longer permanently destroy your best gear as long as you upgrade it to netherite before venturing there.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template?

The Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template is found in chests inside bastion remnants, which are large Nether structures made of blackstone and basalt. Every bastion's treasure room chest is guaranteed to contain one template, and each of the other chests — bridge, hoglin stable, and generic — has a 10% chance of an extra copy.

Is the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template consumed when I upgrade an item?

Yes. Each upgrade consumes the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template — that is exactly why the duplication recipe exists. Plan on one template per item, or duplicate a template with seven diamonds and one netherrack before upgrading several pieces of gear.

What items can be upgraded from diamond to netherite at a Smithing Table?

All diamond tools (pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe, sword) and all diamond armour pieces (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots) can be upgraded to netherite. The upgrade preserves all enchantments and the custom name of the item.

What are armour trims and how do I apply them at a Smithing Table?

Armour trims are decorative patterns applied to any armour piece at the Smithing Table. They require a trim smithing template (found in various structures), the armour piece, and any ingot or gem as the colour material. Trims are purely cosmetic and do not affect armour stats or enchantments.

How do I make a villager a toolsmith using a Smithing Table?

Place a Smithing Table near an unemployed villager in a village. The villager will claim the Smithing Table as a job site and become a toolsmith, offering trades for iron and diamond tools in exchange for emeralds.

Can I duplicate a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template?

Yes. Place the template in the top-centre slot of a crafting table, one netherrack block in the centre, and one diamond in each of the seven remaining slots. This produces two Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates from one, allowing you to upgrade multiple items without farming more bastions.
