Redstone Lamp
Redstone Lamp lights up at full brightness when powered — the cleanest way to wire programmable lighting into builds.
Description
This behaviour makes it the go-to choice for programmable lighting. Wire it to a daylight sensor for automatic dusk activation, to a pressure plate for entry hall lights, or to an observer-and-piston combo for animated displays. Multiple lamps can be controlled in parallel from a single switch, and because the off state is a fully solid neutral block, builds can hide entire ceilings of lamps that vanish flush with surrounding stone or wood when the circuit is off.
Guide
How to Wire a Redstone Lamp in Minecraft
-
1
Craft the Redstone Lamp
Open the crafting table and place 1 glowstone block in the center. Surround it with 4 redstone dust in the top, bottom, left, and right slots (plus/cross shape). This yields 1 Redstone Lamp, which remains dark until it receives a redstone signal.
-
2
Place the Redstone Lamp
Set the Redstone Lamp in your build where you want programmable lighting. In its unpowered state the Redstone Lamp looks like dim glowstone with a slightly darker texture and emits no light (level 0), so it blends flush with stone or wood surfaces.
-
3
Connect a Power Source
Run redstone dust from a lever, button, or pressure plate to any face of the Redstone Lamp. Any signal strength from 1 to 15 activates the Redstone Lamp fully — it immediately jumps to light level 15, matching glowstone or a sea lantern. The Redstone Lamp turns off the instant the signal stops.
-
4
Automate with a Daylight Sensor
For automatic night lighting, right-click a daylight sensor to switch it to inverted mode. Connect the inverted daylight sensor to the Redstone Lamp with redstone dust. The inverted daylight sensor outputs a signal at night and zero during the day, so the Redstone Lamp activates automatically at dusk without any manual switch.
-
5
Build Animated Displays or Latch Circuits
Chain multiple Redstone Lamps from one signal line to control an entire ceiling or sign simultaneously. For latching, feed an RS NOR latch output into the Redstone Lamp circuit. The Redstone Lamp blast resistance of only 1.5 makes it as fragile as glass, so protect it from explosions in exposed builds.
A Redstone Lamp at light level 15 melts ice and snow in Java Edition, making it useful for keeping outdoor pathways clear in cold biomes when the circuit is active.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft a Redstone Lamp?
Place 1 glowstone block in the center of a crafting table and surround it with 4 redstone dust in the top, bottom, left, and right slots. This cross/plus pattern yields 1 Redstone Lamp.
What light level does a Redstone Lamp emit?
A powered Redstone Lamp emits light level 15 — the maximum in Minecraft, equal to glowstone, a sea lantern, or a beacon beam. An unpowered Redstone Lamp emits light level 0.
What can trigger a Redstone Lamp?
Any redstone signal source activates a Redstone Lamp: levers, buttons, pressure plates, daylight sensors, observers, comparators, tripwire hooks, and redstone torches all work. Any signal strength from 1 to 15 produces the same full brightness.
Does a Redstone Lamp melt ice or snow?
Yes. In Java Edition, a powered Redstone Lamp at light level 15 melts ice and snow within a few blocks, just like glowstone does. This can be useful for keeping outdoor paths clear in cold biomes.
What is the difference between a Redstone Lamp and glowstone?
Glowstone always emits light level 15 passively. A Redstone Lamp requires a redstone signal to light up and goes completely dark (level 0) without one. This makes the Redstone Lamp ideal for switchable and automated lighting where glowstone cannot be turned off.
How do you make automatic night lighting with a Redstone Lamp?
Place a daylight sensor next to or connected via redstone dust to a Redstone Lamp, then right-click the daylight sensor to switch it to inverted mode. The inverted daylight sensor outputs a high signal at night and zero during the day, so the Redstone Lamp turns on automatically at dusk and off at dawn.
