Description

Red Sandstone Slab is a half-height decorative variant of red sandstone that never generates naturally in a Minecraft world and exists only as a crafted building block. On a crafting table, three red sandstone blocks placed in one straight row yield six Red Sandstone Slabs, and a stonecutter turns a single red sandstone block into two slabs. Any pickaxe harvests Red Sandstone Slab — a wooden pickaxe already meets the tier requirement — and mining without a pickaxe drops nothing. Red Sandstone Slab stacks to 64 per inventory slot, emits no light, never catches fire, and survives contact with lava. A single slab only partially blocks light, while two matching halves placed in one block space merge into a double slab that breaks as one block and drops two slabs.

Builders choose Red Sandstone Slab wherever a red-orange surface needs a softer silhouette than a full red sandstone block: floors, window sills, balconies, and graduated walls. A floor of bottom-half Red Sandstone Slabs weakens explosions set off directly on top — sometimes a TNT blast destroys only the slab — and mobs cannot spawn on bottom slabs, so bottom-half floors keep bases and mob farms spawn-free. Mobs still pathfind across Red Sandstone Slab as if the slab were a full block, so animal pens and walkways keep working. The top face of a top-half slab and the bottom face of a bottom-half slab count as solid placement surfaces for blocks that need firm ground. Red Sandstone Slab arrived in Java Edition 1.8 and remains the natural half-block companion for red sandstone builds.

Guide

How to craft Red Sandstone Slab in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather red sandstone

Red Sandstone Slab is made from red sandstone blocks, so collect a stock of red sandstone before starting — each crafting batch consumes three blocks.

  2. 2

    Craft on a crafting table

Place three red sandstone blocks in one straight row of the crafting grid; the recipe yields six Red Sandstone Slabs per batch.

  3. 3

Use a stonecutter for small batches

A stonecutter turns one red sandstone block into two Red Sandstone Slabs, doubling the half-block output of a small supply.

  4. 4

    Mine with any pickaxe

Break Red Sandstone Slab with any pickaxe to collect the slab; breaking the slab by hand drops nothing.

  5. 5

Combine halves into a double slab

Place a Red Sandstone Slab in the top and the bottom half of one block space to form a double slab; breaking the double slab drops two slabs.

Spawn-proof flooring tip

Mobs cannot spawn on bottom-half slabs — a floor built from bottom Red Sandstone Slabs keeps base interiors spawn-free.

Frequently asked questions

Is Red Sandstone Slab renewable?

Yes. Red Sandstone Slab counts as renewable in Minecraft, so building projects are not tied to a one-time world supply.

When was Red Sandstone Slab added to Minecraft?

Java Edition received Red Sandstone Slab in version 1.8, snapshot 14w32a. The Pocket Edition line added red sandstone slabs in v0.14.0.

Can mobs spawn on Red Sandstone Slab?

Mobs cannot spawn on bottom-half Red Sandstone Slabs, so the bottom half is the safe choice for flooring. Mobs can spawn on top-half slabs and double slabs, and mobs treat every Red Sandstone Slab as a full block while pathfinding.

Can Red Sandstone Slab sit underwater?

Yes. Red Sandstone Slab is waterloggable: water fills the block space while the slab stays in place, so pools and canals keep the half-block silhouette.
