Description

Chiseled Red Sandstone is a carved variant of red sandstone, crafted from two red sandstone slabs stacked one above the other in the middle column of a crafting grid. The crafting recipe yields one Chiseled Red Sandstone. A stonecutter provides the second recipe: one red sandstone cut in a stonecutter becomes one Chiseled Red Sandstone without any slabs. Chiseled Red Sandstone first appeared in Java Edition 1.8 and reached Bedrock Edition in the Pocket Alpha 0.14.0 update.
The carved face of the Wither, an undead boss mob, decorates Chiseled Red Sandstone and makes the carved pattern distinct from smooth red sandstone walls. Unlike red sand, Chiseled Red Sandstone is never affected by gravity, so carved columns and overhangs keep their shape without support blocks. Any pickaxe breaks Chiseled Red Sandstone, a wooden pickaxe is the minimum tier, and mining without a pickaxe drops nothing. Chiseled Red Sandstone stacks to 64, does not burn, and is renewable (the block can be crafted endlessly).

Guide

How to craft Chiseled Red Sandstone in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Collect two red sandstone slabs

Red sandstone slabs are the only ingredient: exactly two slabs turn into one Chiseled Red Sandstone, and no other items are needed.

  2. 2

    Stack the slabs vertically

The crafting grid needs one red sandstone slab in the center cell and the second slab directly below; the output slot then shows one Chiseled Red Sandstone.

  3. 3

Cut red sandstone in a stonecutter

A stonecutter offers a slab-free route: one red sandstone becomes one Chiseled Red Sandstone.

  4. 4

    Mine with a pickaxe

A wooden pickaxe is the weakest working tool; without a pickaxe, Chiseled Red Sandstone drops nothing.

Chiseled Red Sandstone ignores gravity

Unlike red sand, Chiseled Red Sandstone never falls, so carved overhangs and floating ornaments hold without support blocks.
