Description

Red Sandstone is a building block crafted from four Red Sand in a 2×2 crafting grid. Unlike Red Sand, Red Sandstone is never affected by gravity. Breaking Red Sandstone requires a pickaxe — even a wooden one works — because mining without a pickaxe drops nothing. Red Sandstone has a hardness of 0.8, a blast resistance of 0.8, stacks to 64, and appeared in Java Edition 1.8 and Bedrock Edition 0.14.0. In Java Edition, Red Sandstone generates where floating Red Sand appears in badlands, most often at cave entrances — generation restored in version 1.18. Bedrock Edition generates red sandstone platforms that support red sand beneath village buildings in badlands.

A crafting table turns Red Sandstone into matching parts: three blocks give six slabs, six give four stairs, six give six walls, and four give four cut blocks. A stonecutter converts a single Red Sandstone into stairs, walls, cut or chiseled versions, or two slabs. A furnace smelts Red Sandstone into smooth red sandstone, a variant Java Edition added in 1.14. Wandering traders sell Red Sand in Java Edition, making Red Sandstone renewable — a trade added in 1.14 — while Bedrock Edition wandering traders stopped selling red sandstone in 1.16. The warm red tone suits badlands outposts, terraces, and accent walls without the falling behavior of Red Sand.

Guide

How to Craft Red Sandstone in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Collect four Red Sand

Travel to badlands and dig four Red Sand, or buy Red Sand from a wandering trader in Java Edition.

  2. 2

    Fill a 2×2 crafting grid

Place the four Red Sand in a square on a crafting grid to craft one Red Sandstone.

  3. 3

    Mine with a pickaxe

Break placed Red Sandstone with any pickaxe, wooden or better, because mining without a pickaxe drops nothing.

  4. 4

    Shape blocks on a stonecutter

Use a stonecutter to turn one Red Sandstone into stairs, walls, cut or chiseled versions, or two slabs.

  5. 5

    Smelt for the smooth variant

Put Red Sandstone and fuel into a furnace to smelt smooth red sandstone for clean surfaces.

Red Sandstone does not fall

Unlike Red Sand, Red Sandstone ignores gravity, so overhangs and floating edges keep their shape without support blocks.
