Block of Quartz
Block of Quartz is the brilliant white building material crafted from four nether quartz crystals — the cleanest light tone in vanilla, with three decorative variants and full stonecutter support.
Description
Block of Quartz has three direct decorative variants: Chiseled Quartz Block (stacked from two quartz slabs on the crafting grid), Quartz Pillar (two Blocks of Quartz arranged vertically produce two striped columns), and Smooth Quartz Block (smelted from any Block of Quartz in a furnace). All four forms convert into slabs and stairs in Java Edition — in Bedrock only the plain block cuts — making the quartz family one of the most complete decorative sets in the game. Pair Block of Quartz with sea lanterns for futuristic interiors, with stone bricks for marble palace floors, or with red nether bricks for striking Nether-temple contrasts.

How to use Block of Quartz in Minecraft builds
-
1
Gather nether quartz from the Nether
Mine nether quartz ore with any pickaxe in the Nether dimension — each ore drops 1 nether quartz, and Fortune III raises the yield to a maximum of 4 per ore. The ore generates in every Nether biome between Y=10 and Y=117, and in basalt deltas it attempts to spawn twice as often per chunk (32 tries instead of 16).
-
2
Craft the Block of Quartz
Open a crafting table and place four nether quartz crystals in a 2×2 square in any position on the grid. Each recipe of 4 crystals produces one Block of Quartz. No smelting step is required — the block comes directly from the crafting table.
-
3
Choose your variant at the stonecutter
Place a Block of Quartz into a stonecutter to cut slabs (2 per block), stairs, Quartz Pillar, Chiseled Quartz Block, or Quartz Bricks — quartz walls do not exist in vanilla. For Smooth Quartz Block, smelt a Block of Quartz in any furnace. On the crafting grid, two Blocks of Quartz stacked vertically yield 2 Quartz Pillars, and two quartz slabs stacked vertically yield 1 Chiseled Quartz Block.
-
4
Build with the full quartz family
Combine Block of Quartz, Chiseled Quartz Block, Quartz Pillar, and Smooth Quartz Block in the same structure for layered depth and texture. Use Quartz Pillar horizontally as ceiling beams, Chiseled Quartz Block for accent panels, and Block of Quartz for main walls. Sea lanterns recessed into quartz floors create a popular futuristic flooring effect.
-
5
Pair with contrasting blocks for visual impact
Block of Quartz reads best against dark materials. Black concrete or blackstone creates a modern high-contrast facade. Red nether bricks add a Nether-temple feel. Stone bricks next to Block of Quartz evoke marble palace interiors popular in medieval and fantasy builds.
Block of Quartz does not burn and cannot be ignited by lava, but its blast resistance is only 0.8 — far below stone's 6, so creepers and TNT break it easily. It cannot be used as furnace fuel. Nether quartz ore never regenerates — for large-scale quartz projects, explore fresh Nether territory or buy blocks from a master mason villager (1 emerald each).

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft a Block of Quartz?
Place four nether quartz crystals in a 2×2 square on the crafting table. Each recipe produces one Block of Quartz. No smelting is required.
What are the decorative variants of Block of Quartz?
Block of Quartz has four decorative variants: Chiseled Quartz Block (stack two quartz slabs vertically on the crafting grid or use the stonecutter), Quartz Pillar (two Blocks of Quartz vertically yield 2 pillars), Smooth Quartz Block (smelt a Block of Quartz in a furnace), and Quartz Bricks (a 2×2 square of blocks, since 1.16). Slabs and stairs are cut at the stonecutter; quartz walls do not exist in the game.
What tool mines Block of Quartz fastest?
Any pickaxe mines Block of Quartz. Without a pickaxe the block drops nothing. A golden pickaxe breaks it fastest (0.1 seconds); diamond and netherite are nearly as fast, and even a wooden pickaxe works, just slowly.
Can Block of Quartz be used as fuel?
No. Block of Quartz is not a fuel source. It can only be placed in a furnace as the input material — smelting it converts the block into Smooth Quartz Block.
Does Block of Quartz work in Java and Bedrock Edition?
Yes. Block of Quartz is available in both Java and Bedrock Edition. It was introduced in Java Edition 1.5 (the Redstone Update, March 2013).
Can Block of Quartz catch fire or burn?
No. Block of Quartz is not flammable and does not ignite from fire spread or lava contact. Its blast resistance is 0.8 — far below stone's 6.
