Description

Pumpkin Seeds behave like melon seeds in every major aspect: they require farmland, light of nine or above, and a free adjacent block of dirt, grass, or farmland for the pumpkin to appear. The stem grows through eight stages and then attempts to place a pumpkin block beside itself on every random tick. Unlike most other crops, the stem persists after harvest and does not need replanting. Seeds come from dungeon, mineshaft, temple, bastion, and village chests, or can be crafted from a pumpkin block at a crafting table. Breaking the pumpkin block without Silk Touch always drops one whole pumpkin, not slices, making the output different from melons. Pumpkins are used for jack-o-lanterns, carved pumpkin helmets, snow golem and iron golem spawning, and pumpkin pie crafting. In large automated farms, two or three stems per output spot keep production consistent even if spreading events are missed on some ticks.

How to farm Pumpkin Seeds in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the Pumpkin Seeds

Place one pumpkin in any crafting grid slot to get four Pumpkin Seeds, or loot them from village, mineshaft, and dungeon chests.

  2. 2

    Till and light the farmland

Hoe dirt or grass into farmland next to water and keep the light level at nine or higher so the stem can grow.

  3. 3

Plant and leave an empty tile

Plant Pumpkin Seeds on the farmland and leave one adjacent dirt, grass, or farmland block free so the pumpkin can appear.

  4. 4

Harvest the pumpkin, not the stem

Break the grown pumpkin block with any tool; the Pumpkin Seeds stem stays in place and keeps producing without replanting.

Tip

An observer aimed at the empty tile plus a piston makes a fully automatic pumpkin farm, because the Pumpkin Seeds stem never needs replanting.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Pumpkin Seeds in Minecraft?

Craft one pumpkin into four Pumpkin Seeds at a crafting grid, or find them in village, mineshaft, dungeon, and temple chests.

Do Pumpkin Seeds need replanting after harvest?

No. The Pumpkin Seeds stem survives harvesting and grows a new pumpkin on an adjacent free block, so you only plant once.

Why won't my Pumpkin Seeds grow a pumpkin?

The stem needs a free dirt, grass, or farmland block beside it and light level nine or higher; without an empty adjacent tile no pumpkin spawns.

Can you eat Pumpkin Seeds?

No. Pumpkin Seeds are only for planting; the pumpkins they produce go into pumpkin pie, while the seeds themselves are not food.
