Gather 5 leather
Kill cows, horses, or mules, or trade with a leatherworker villager, until you have 5 leather.

Craft the cap
Place the 5 leather across the top row and the left and right middle slots of the crafting grid to make 1 Leather Cap.

Dye it (optional)
In Java Edition combine the cap with any dye in the crafting grid; in Bedrock Edition dip it in a cauldron of dyed water.

Equip and enchant
Wear it in the head slot, then enchant it with Protection or Unbreaking at an enchanting table to extend its 55 durability.
Dyeing works differently in Java Edition (crafting grid) and Bedrock Edition (cauldron).
