Grindstone — Minecraft block

Grindstone

Grindstone strips enchantments from items and repairs gear without experience cost — the workstation of the weaponsmith villager.

Description

Grindstone is crafted from two sticks, one stone slab, and two planks of any wood type in the standard pattern — a cheap recipe that lands the device in most early-game bases. The two-input interface accepts items in either slot. Combining two same-type items (two iron pickaxes, two diamond swords) repairs them without using any experience, with the result keeping the durability of both items combined plus a small bonus.

The second function is decisive: placing a single enchanted item alone in the device strips its enchantments off and refunds a small amount of experience. This is the only way to undo bad enchanting choices without losing the gear, making the device essential for cleaning up unwanted librarian-trade books or removing curse-of-binding before discarding old armour. The block also serves as the workstation of the weaponsmith villager profession; placing one in a village without an active weaponsmith recruits an unemployed villager into the role.

Guide

How to use a Grindstone in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the Grindstone

Place two sticks in the top corners, one stone slab in the top centre, and two planks of any wood type in the middle row of a crafting table to produce one Grindstone. Stone slabs are crafted from three cobblestone, stone, or smooth stone blocks.

  2. 2

Repair two items of the same type

Open the Grindstone interface and place one damaged item in each of the two input slots. The output slot shows the repaired item with combined durability plus a 5% bonus. No experience levels are spent, unlike an anvil repair.

  3. 3

    Strip enchantments to recover experience

Place a single enchanted item in either input slot of the Grindstone and leave the other slot empty. The Grindstone removes every non-curse enchantment and returns a small amount of experience proportional to the enchantment levels. 拘束の呪い and 消滅の呪い cannot be removed this way.

  4. 4

    Reset high anvil-prior-work penalties

An anvil refuses to combine items when the combined prior-work cost exceeds 39 levels. Removing enchantments in a Grindstone resets the prior-work penalty to zero, making the item cheap to re-enchant on an enchanting table or re-combine on an anvil.

  5. 5

Assign the weaponsmith profession to a villager

Place a Grindstone near an unemployed villager in a village. The villager claims the Grindstone as a job site block and becomes a weaponsmith, offering sword and axe trades in exchange for emeralds.

Tip

Grindstone repair does not increase the prior-work penalty, so it is always cheaper than anvil repair when you only need durability restored and do not care about keeping enchantments.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Grindstone remove 拘束の呪い or 消滅の呪い?

No. The Grindstone removes only normal enchantments. 拘束の呪い and 消滅の呪い are permanent and cannot be stripped by any in-game tool, including the Grindstone.

How much experience does a Grindstone return when removing enchantments?

The Grindstone returns a small, variable amount of experience based on the total enchantment levels on the item. Higher-level enchantments yield more experience, but the refund is always less than the original enchanting cost.

Is Grindstone repair better than anvil repair?

Grindstone repair costs zero experience and does not increase the prior-work penalty, making it ideal for restoring durability on unenchanted or unwanted-enchanted items. Anvil repair preserves enchantments and can combine enchantment books, but costs experience and raises the prior-work penalty each time.

Does combining two items on a Grindstone remove their enchantments?

Yes. When you place two items in both input slots, the Grindstone repairs them and strips all enchantments from both. The output item has no enchantments. If you want to preserve enchantments while repairing, use an anvil instead.

How do I make a villager a weaponsmith using a Grindstone?

Place a Grindstone block within a village near an unemployed villager. The villager will walk to the Grindstone, claim it as a job site, and take on the weaponsmith profession, which trades iron and diamond swords and axes.
