Glow Item Frame
Glow Item Frame highlights displayed objects with glow ink, making signs and maps readable in darkness.
Description
Builders use it for storage labels, museum exhibits, map walls, shop prices, and control panels where ordinary frames disappear into shadows. It does not light the surrounding area like a torch, so the benefit is emphasis rather than illumination. Glow squid farms make large labelled warehouses much cleaner once ink sacs become renewable.
Guide
How to use a Glow Item Frame in Minecraft
-
1
Gather materials
To craft a Glow Item Frame, collect one regular Item Frame and one Glow Ink Sac. Glow Ink Sacs drop from Glow Squids found in underground water pools at any depth.
-
2
Craft the frame
Open a crafting table and place the Item Frame in any slot with the Glow Ink Sac adjacent to it — a single valid recipe using both materials produces one Glow Item Frame.
-
3
Place and fill
Right-click any wall, floor, or ceiling block to attach the Glow Item Frame, then right-click again with the item you want to display. The Glow Item Frame holds one item and rotates it through eight positions when right-clicked.
-
4
Use with redstone
A comparator placed adjacent to a Glow Item Frame reads the rotation state of its item — eight positions give signal strengths 1 through 8, matching the behavior of a regular Item Frame.

Design tips
Combine Glow Item Frames with dark stone palettes such as Blackstone or Deepslate to maximize contrast. Because the Glow Item Frame does not emit block light, it will not interfere with mob spawning conditions.
Farming Glow Squids in enclosed underwater rooms speeds up Glow Ink Sac collection significantly, making large labelling projects much cheaper.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft a Glow Item Frame?
Combine one regular Item Frame with one Glow Ink Sac on a crafting table. Glow Ink Sacs are dropped by Glow Squids found in underground water.
Does a Glow Item Frame emit light?
No. The Glow Item Frame does not emit block light. The item inside appears visually bright, but the frame has no light level and does not prevent mob spawning.
How is a Glow Item Frame different from a regular Item Frame?
Functionally they are identical: both hold one item, rotate through eight positions, and can be read by a comparator. The only difference is that the Glow Item Frame makes the displayed item appear lit, improving visibility in dark areas.
Can a Glow Item Frame be used with redstone?
Yes. A comparator adjacent to a Glow Item Frame reads the rotation position of the stored item, outputting a signal from 1 to 8. This behavior is the same as for a regular Item Frame.
Is the Glow Item Frame available in Bedrock Edition?
Yes. The Glow Item Frame was added in Java Edition 1.17 and in Bedrock Edition 1.17.10, both released as part of the Caves and Cliffs update.
