Fire Charge
Fire Charge is a crafted fireball for dispensers, portals, and emergency ignition.
Description
The item sits between utility and combat. It helps relight portals when a player lacks flint, powers automated ignition systems, and adds ranged fire to redstone contraptions. Because the recipe needs blaze powder, it usually appears after Nether progression. Builders also use it in firework star recipes to create large ball explosion effects.

How to Craft and Use a Fire Charge in Minecraft
-
1
Gather the 3 materials
To craft Fire Charges, collect 1 blaze powder dropped by blazes in Nether fortresses, 1 coal or charcoal, and 1 gunpowder dropped by creepers or witches. Each crafting session produces 3 Fire Charges.
-
2
Craft Fire Charges at a crafting table
Open a crafting table and place 1 blaze powder, 1 coal or charcoal, and 1 gunpowder in any arrangement. The recipe yields 3 Fire Charges. Fire Charges stack up to 64 in a single inventory slot.
-
3
Launch a Fire Charge by hand
Hold a Fire Charge and right-click to launch a fireball projectile. The fireball travels in a straight line, ignites whatever it hits, and behaves like a ghast fireball. The Fire Charge is consumed immediately on use. The fireball will not set the player on fire.
-
4
Fire from a dispenser for automation
Load one or more Fire Charges into a dispenser, then power the dispenser with a redstone signal. Each redstone pulse fires one fireball. This setup automates portal relighting or creates redstone-powered fire traps without player input.
-
5
Use Fire Charge in a firework star
Add a Fire Charge to a firework star recipe alongside gunpowder and any dye to produce a large ball explosion shape. This works in Java and Bedrock Edition and is the only way to craft the large ball firework effect.
In Java Edition, a launched Fire Charge fireball can be deflected by hitting it back mid-air, just like a ghast fireball. Use this defensively or to redirect the fireball toward a target.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft a Fire Charge in Minecraft?
Combine 1 blaze powder, 1 coal or charcoal, and 1 gunpowder in any arrangement on a crafting table. The recipe produces 3 Fire Charges per craft. Blaze powder is obtained from blazes in Nether fortresses.
What does a Fire Charge do when used by hand?
Right-clicking with a Fire Charge launches a fireball projectile that travels in a straight line and ignites whatever it hits. The Fire Charge is consumed on use. The fireball behaves like a ghast fireball and will not set the player on fire.
Can a Fire Charge activate a Nether portal?
Yes. Both hand-launching and dispenser-firing a Fire Charge can ignite the obsidian frame of a Nether portal and activate it, just like flint and steel. This makes Fire Charges useful for portal automation.
What is the difference between a Fire Charge and flint and steel?
Flint and steel ignites adjacent blocks by right-clicking directly on them and has durability. A Fire Charge launches a projectile and is consumed on use, but can be loaded into a dispenser for remote or automated ignition. Flint and steel cannot be loaded into dispensers.
Can you use a Fire Charge in a dispenser?
Yes. Loading Fire Charges into a dispenser and powering it with a Redstone signal fires a fireball each pulse. This allows automated ignition systems, traps, or auto-relighting Nether portals without player interaction.
What is the firework star recipe that uses a Fire Charge?
Adding a Fire Charge to a firework star recipe (gunpowder plus dye plus Fire Charge) creates the large ball explosion shape. This is the only way to craft a large ball firework effect in both Java and Bedrock Edition.
