Description

Feather is an item dropped by chickens in Minecraft, with each chicken dropping 0–2 feathers on death and up to 5 when killed by a sword enchanted with Looting III. Feather is fully renewable because chickens breed with any seeds and lay eggs that hatch into new birds. The lightweight white item behaves identically in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Feather is the key fletching ingredient for arrows: one feather, one flint, and one stick crafted together yield four arrows. Since the Trails & Tales update (1.20), Feather also crafts the Brush from one feather, one copper ingot, and one stick — the tool used to excavate suspicious sand and gravel at archaeology sites. Stockpile feathers from an automatic chicken farm to keep a steady arrow supply for skeleton defense, ranged combat, and tipped-arrow brewing.

How to get and use Feathers in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find or farm chickens

Locate chickens in plains and other grassy biomes, or breed two adults with any seeds to spawn chicks for a renewable feather source.

  2. 2

    Collect the feathers

Kill chickens to drop 0–2 feathers each; use a sword enchanted with Looting III to raise the maximum to 5 feathers per chicken.

  3. 3

    Craft arrows

Place one flint on top, one stick in the middle, and one feather at the bottom of the crafting grid to produce four arrows.

  4. 4

    Craft a Brush

Stack one feather above one copper ingot above one stick to craft the Brush for excavating suspicious sand and gravel.

Feather Falling is not the item

Feather Falling is an armor enchantment named after feathers, but it is applied with an enchanting table or anvil and does not consume the feather item.
