Description

Book and Quill is a writable book in Minecraft, crafted on the 3x3 grid by combining one Book, one Feather, and one Ink Sac in any arrangement (a shapeless recipe). Book and Quill does not generate naturally in the world — every copy is player-made, which also makes Book and Quill fully renewable, since chickens supply feathers, squid drop ink sacs, and books come from paper and leather. When held and used, Book and Quill opens a text editor that stores up to 100 pages in Java Edition, with each page edited freely until the book is signed.

Players use Book and Quill for server rules, build guides, adventure-map lore, libraries, and personal in-game notes. Selecting Sign converts Book and Quill into a Written Book, which locks the text, records the author's name, and lets the book be copied or placed inside a Lectern for everyone to read. A signed Written Book can no longer be edited, so keep an unsigned Book and Quill if the text still needs changes.

Java Edition Guide

How to make and use a Book and Quill in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather the three ingredients

Collect one Book (3 paper + 1 leather), one Feather from a chicken, and one Ink Sac from a squid.

  2. 2

    Craft the Book and Quill

Place the Book, Feather, and Ink Sac in any cells of the 3x3 grid — the recipe is shapeless — to create one Book and Quill.

  3. 3

    Write your text

Hold the Book and Quill and use it to open the editor, then type up to 100 pages of rules, notes, or lore.

  4. 4

Sign it into a Written Book

Press Sign and enter a title to convert the Book and Quill into a Written Book that records your name and locks the text.

  5. 5

    Share or copy the book

Place the Written Book in a Lectern so others can read it, or combine it with a fresh Book and Quill to make a copy.

Editing limit

Once a Book and Quill is signed into a Written Book, the text can no longer be edited. Keep an unsigned copy if the content still needs to change.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft a Book and Quill in Minecraft?

Combine one Book, one Feather, and one Ink Sac in any cells of the crafting grid. The recipe is shapeless, so the positions do not matter, and it makes one Book and Quill.

How many pages can a Book and Quill hold?

A Book and Quill holds up to 100 pages in Java Edition, and each page can be edited freely until the book is signed.

What is the difference between a Book and Quill and a Written Book?

A Book and Quill is editable, while signing it creates a Written Book that is locked, shows the author's name, and can be copied or read in a Lectern.

Can you copy a Book and Quill?

You copy the signed version: place a Written Book together with a Book and Quill in the crafting grid to produce a copy of the book.

Is a Book and Quill renewable?

Yes. Book and Quill is renewable because chickens regrow feathers, squid drop ink sacs, and books come from renewable paper and leather.
