Dark Oak Log carries the darkest natural bark in Minecraft — extracted only from massive trees in the dark forest biome.
Description
Unlike most species, dark oak only sprouts from a 2×2 sapling cluster. A single sapling refuses to grow. Once mature, the tree forms a thick trunk surrounded by horizontal branches that mushroom outward into a flat canopy, distinct from any other species' silhouette. A single tree easily yields thirty or more logs. The block strips with an axe, smelts to charcoal in any furnace, and produces four dark oak planks per unit on the crafting grid.

Find the dark forest biome
Locate a dark forest (roofed forest) biome, recognizable by its extremely dense canopy of dark oak trees that keeps the forest floor in near-constant darkness. These biomes have thick 2×2-block-wide tree trunks with flat, mushroom-like canopies and natural red and brown mushrooms on the ground.

Equip an axe
Select an axe from your hotbar before breaking logs. An iron axe mines Dark Oak Log in under 0.5 seconds; bare hands take about 3 seconds per block. A diamond or netherite axe is even faster at roughly 0.25 seconds.

Chop the entire trunk and branches
Mine every Dark Oak Log block, including the horizontal branch sections. Dark oak forms large branching trunks that can contain 30 or more log blocks per tree. Break from the top down so loose logs fall to you rather than getting stuck on leaves.

Grow your own dark oak tree
Plant 4 Dark Oak Saplings in a 2×2 square on grass or dirt. A single sapling never grows — the 2×2 cluster is mandatory. Apply bone meal to any one of the four saplings to force immediate growth without waiting.

Convert logs to planks or charcoal
Place 1 Dark Oak Log in any crafting slot to yield 4 Dark Oak Planks — the standard 1:4 ratio for all wood types. Alternatively, smelt Dark Oak Log in a furnace to produce 1 charcoal, which smelts 8 items and is useful when coal is scarce.
Right-click Dark Oak Log with an axe equipped to strip it into Stripped Dark Oak Log, revealing a lighter wood texture underneath. Stripping yields no additional drops but is popular for building interiors and modern architecture where a cleaner wood grain is preferred.
