Description

Cobbled Deepslate is what falls from raw deepslate when mined without a Silk Touch pickaxe — the deep-cave analogue of cobblestone, sharing the same rough surface texture but with a noticeably darker, charcoal-grey tone. Any pickaxe tier, including a wooden one, is enough to mine it. Cobbled Deepslate does not appear as a pre-placed terrain block in standard caves, but it does occur naturally inside Ruined Portals that generate below Y=0, making it discoverable without breaking a single block in the surrounding deepslate layer.

The recipe roster mirrors cobblestone closely: Cobbled Deepslate slabs, stairs, and walls all craft directly, and a stonecutter converts one block into two slabs or gives a 1:1 ratio for stairs and walls — more material-efficient than the crafting table for stairs. Four Cobbled Deepslate in a 2×2 crafting grid produce four Polished Deepslate blocks, the refined variant from which Deepslate Bricks and Deepslate Tiles are made. Smelting one Cobbled Deepslate in a furnace yields one regular Deepslate block, which unlocks the full stonecutter chain for every polished, brick, tile, and chiseled variant. The dark charcoal texture makes Cobbled Deepslate walls and floors the standard pick for moody underground dungeons, dark castles, and modern brutalist builds.

Survival Guide

How to Obtain and Process Cobbled Deepslate in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Reach the Deep Underground

Cobbled Deepslate drops from any Deepslate block mined without Silk Touch. Deepslate generates from Y=0 down to Y=−64 — equip torches and dig past the stone layer into the deep underground where the darker grey rock begins.

  2. 2

    Mine Without Silk Touch

Use any pickaxe (wooden or better) without the Silk Touch enchantment. Wooden pickaxes work but are slow; stone or iron is practical for bulk collection during diamond runs. Silk Touch gives regular Deepslate instead — useful if you want to skip smelting.

  3. 3

    Craft Polished Deepslate

Place four Cobbled Deepslate blocks in a 2×2 crafting grid to get four Polished Deepslate. Polished Deepslate is the refined building block and the crafting ingredient for Deepslate Bricks (4 in 2×2) and Deepslate Tiles.

  4. 4

Use the Stonecutter for Efficient Cutting

Feed Cobbled Deepslate into a stonecutter: one block becomes two slabs (better than the crafting table's 3:6 ratio) or converts 1:1 into stairs and walls. Stonecutter also lets you cut Cobbled Deepslate directly into Polished Deepslate at 1:1.

  5. 5

    Smelt for Regular Deepslate

Place Cobbled Deepslate in a furnace with any fuel to get one regular Deepslate per block. Regular Deepslate unlocks additional stonecutter paths for chiseled variants and gives a slightly smoother look for building.

Tip

Ruined Portals that generate below Y=0 contain pre-placed Cobbled Deepslate — loot the structure before mining the surrounding terrain to collect blocks without using pickaxe durability.

Frequently asked questions

What is Cobbled Deepslate used for in Minecraft?

Cobbled Deepslate crafts into slabs, stairs, and walls directly. Four blocks in a 2×2 grid yield Polished Deepslate, which leads to Deepslate Bricks and Deepslate Tiles. Smelting one block in a furnace returns one regular Deepslate, useful for stonecutter conversions.

How do you get Cobbled Deepslate?

Mine any Deepslate block without a Silk Touch pickaxe. Deepslate generates from Y=0 to Y=−64. Any pickaxe tier (including wooden) is enough — you do not need a stone pickaxe.

Does Cobbled Deepslate generate naturally in the world?

Cobbled Deepslate does not appear as ordinary cave terrain. However, Ruined Portals that generate below Y=0 use Cobbled Deepslate as a building block, so it can be found without mining the surrounding deepslate layer.

What pickaxe do you need to mine Cobbled Deepslate?

Any pickaxe, including a wooden one, is enough — the same mining level as regular cobblestone. Using a pickaxe without the Silk Touch enchantment drops Cobbled Deepslate; with Silk Touch you get regular Deepslate instead.

Can you smelt Cobbled Deepslate into something useful?

Yes. Smelting one Cobbled Deepslate in a furnace gives one regular Deepslate block. Regular Deepslate has a slightly smoother texture and unlocks additional stonecutter paths, including chiseled deepslate variants.

What is the difference between Cobbled Deepslate and regular Deepslate?

Cobbled Deepslate has a rough, uneven texture and drops when Deepslate is mined without Silk Touch. Regular Deepslate has a smoother texture, is obtained with Silk Touch or by smelting Cobbled Deepslate, and unlocks a wider stonecutter recipe chain.
