Description

Brown Mushroom is one of two vanilla mushrooms in Minecraft and the only small plant that passively emits light level 1, making it a rare decorative light source. It generates naturally in dark areas with a light level of 12 or below, in Mushroom Fields biomes at any light level, and inside the Nether. On grass, dirt, podzol, or mycelium under low light it spreads slowly, so a small starter patch can become a self-replenishing farm. Applying bone meal to a Brown Mushroom planted on dirt, podzol, or mycelium grows it into a Huge Brown Mushroom with a wide flat parasol-shaped cap when the surrounding light is 12 or lower and there is room overhead. Brown Mushroom is the key ingredient in Fermented Spider Eye, which is required for Potions of Weakness, Slowness, Invisibility, and Harming — Red Mushroom cannot replace it here. It also crafts Mushroom Stew with a Red Mushroom and a Bowl, and substitutes for Red Mushroom in Rabbit Stew and Suspicious Stew. Brown Mooshrooms, created when lightning strikes a Red Mooshroom, drop Brown Mushrooms when sheared. Composters accept Brown Mushroom with a 65% level chance. The block breaks instantly without a tool and can be displayed inside a Flower Pot.

Guide

How to find and use Brown Mushroom in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find Brown Mushrooms

Search dark caves with light level 12 or below, the Nether, or any Mushroom Fields biome where they grow at any light level.

  2. 2

    Start a farm

Place Brown Mushrooms on podzol or mycelium under light 12 or lower; they spread slowly within a 4-block radius if nearby mushroom count is low.

  3. 3

    Grow a Huge Brown Mushroom

Plant a Brown Mushroom on dirt, podzol, or mycelium with low light and use bone meal — a wide flat parasol cap forms when there is open vertical space.

  4. 4

    Craft Fermented Spider Eye

Combine 1 Sugar + 1 Brown Mushroom + 1 Spider Eye to brew Potions of Weakness, Slowness, Invisibility, and Harming.

  5. 5

    Cook Mushroom Stew

Place 1 Red Mushroom, 1 Brown Mushroom, and 1 Bowl in the crafting grid to get a Mushroom Stew that restores 6 hunger.

Frequently asked questions

Does Brown Mushroom emit light?

Yes. Brown Mushroom emits light level 1 — small but the only passive light from a small Minecraft plant; Red Mushroom emits 0.

Can I use Red Mushroom instead of Brown for Fermented Spider Eye?

No. The Fermented Spider Eye recipe (Sugar + Brown Mushroom + Spider Eye) accepts only Brown Mushroom.

How do I grow a Huge Brown Mushroom?

Plant on dirt, podzol, or mycelium at light 12 or below with vertical clearance, then apply bone meal — it forms a flat parasol-shaped huge mushroom.

Where do Brown Mooshrooms come from?

Lightning striking a Red Mooshroom converts it into a Brown Mooshroom; shearing one drops a Brown Mushroom and turns it into a regular cow.

What does Brown Mushroom give in a composter?

It has a 65% chance to raise the composter level per item.
