Description

Bricks are produced through a two-step process: smelt clay balls in a furnace one at a time to obtain brick items (the small pottery objects), then arrange four of those brick items in a 2×2 grid to produce one full brick block. Clay balls themselves come from breaking clay clusters — naturally generated patches found at the bottom of shallow water in swamps, rivers, and ponds — with each clay block dropping four balls.

The finished material is the warm terracotta red familiar from real-world construction. Texture is the classic offset interlocking brickwork pattern, each course shifted like real masonry. The block predates almost every other building material in the game: Bricks first appeared in 2009, before the Alpha era even began, and the block remains the default red masonry option even after more than a decade of additions. Stair, slab, and wall variants exist for full architectural use. Bricks have a blast resistance of 6, the same as stone and cobblestone — the standard masonry rating, not a defensive upgrade.

How to make Bricks in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather clay balls

Mine clay blocks at the bottom of shallow swamp water, riverbanks, and ponds. Each clay block drops four clay balls when broken without Silk Touch.

  2. 2

    Smelt clay into brick items

Place the clay balls in a furnace with any fuel. Each clay ball becomes one brick item and grants 0.3 experience.

  3. 3

    Craft the brick block

Arrange four brick items in a 2×2 crafting grid to produce one bricks block.

  4. 4

    Build the variants

Use bricks to craft brick stairs, a brick slab, and a brick wall for complete architectural detailing.

Tip

Bricks require a pickaxe to drop when mined. Breaking the block by hand destroys it and yields nothing.
