Description
Black Banner is a decorative block crafted from six black wool and one stick in a sign-shaped recipe; the crafting recipe produces a single banner, and the base color cannot be changed after crafting. Black Banner is one of 16 blank banner colors, added to Minecraft in Java Edition 1.8 and Bedrock Edition 1.2.0. Woodland mansions generate a Black Banner in the altar room. Black Banner has hardness 1 and blast resistance 1, stacks to 16, and an axe breaks the banner fastest while no tool is required. A placed Black Banner is completely non-solid, so entities move through the banner freely. Pistons cannot move banners, and a Black Banner drops as an item whenever the block the banner is attached to is moved, removed, or destroyed.
A loom customizes Black Banner with up to six pattern layers, using dyes and banner pattern items, and the banner pattern items are not consumed. A cauldron containing water washes off the top pattern layer of Black Banner. Crafting a patterned Black Banner together with a blank banner of the same base color yields two identical banners. A shield combined with Black Banner in the crafting grid receives the banner pattern, and the banner is consumed. A spare Black Banner works as furnace fuel and smelts 1.5 items per banner. An expert shepherd villager sells banners for three emeralds, giving players a renewable source of Black Banner.

Place the banner on the ground or on a wall
Set Black Banner on the ground facing any of 16 directions or attach the banner to a wall. The banner sways gently, has no collision, and lets entities pass through.

Add patterns in a loom
Open a loom with Black Banner, pick a pattern, and apply a dye; some patterns also need a banner pattern item, which is not consumed. Up to six pattern layers stack on a single Black Banner.

Copy the finished design
Craft the patterned Black Banner with a blank Black Banner of the same base color to receive two identical banners. The blank banner must carry no preexisting pattern.

Mark the banner on a map
In Java Edition, using a map on a placed Black Banner marks the banner's position on that map; using the map on the banner again removes the marker. A renamed banner shows the custom name below the map marker.

Can a Black Banner be waterlogged?
Banners can be waterlogged only in Bedrock Edition. Water and lava flow around a placed Black Banner in both editions.
Is Black Banner flammable?
Banners do not burn and cannot be burned by any method. Lava can still set fire to air blocks directly next to a Black Banner.
Can a Black Banner be worn on the head?
Survival mode cannot equip banners in the helmet slot. Commands can place a Black Banner on the player's head in Java Edition, and Bedrock Edition shows the banner through NBT editors.
Can a Black Banner hold more than six patterns?
Commands such as /give can add more than six pattern layers to a Black Banner in Java Edition, and a banner can visually display up to 16 layers. Bedrock Edition banners display only six layers.
