Description

Birch fences are crafted in a 3×2 arrangement of four birch planks and two sticks, yielding three pieces per recipe. Two stick columns are sandwiched between birch plank pairs in the middle row. Wood type is preserved on the output, so the bright pale grain of the planks carries over to the fence.

Like every wooden fence the block is one full block tall to entities that try to walk over it, but only counts as 1.5 blocks of vertical clearance for the player, which prevents passive mobs from jumping the perimeter while still letting the player vault from a stair onto a fence top. Two adjacent fences automatically connect, and a fence gate matching the wood type swings as the intended door.

Fire spreads to and from the block since it is wooden, so a fence around a campfire farm or a torchless wheat plot needs a buffer of dirt or stone if the player wants long-term safety. Fences accept leashes, which lets a birch perimeter double as a tether point for boats, horses and mules in a stable build.

Guide

How to craft and use a Birch Fence in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather materials

Collect at least 4 Birch Planks and 2 Sticks. Birch Planks are made by placing Birch Logs in any crafting slot; Sticks come from 2 planks placed vertically.

  2. 2

    Craft at a Crafting Table

Open the 3×3 Crafting Table grid. Place Birch Planks in columns 1 and 3 of rows 1 and 2, then place Sticks in column 2 of both rows. One recipe run produces 3 Birch Fence sections.

  3. 3

    Place and connect fence sections

Place Birch Fence sections on the ground by right-clicking. Adjacent Birch Fence sections connect automatically, forming a continuous barrier without any extra action required.

  4. 4

Add a Birch Fence Gate for entry

Craft a Birch Fence Gate from 2 Birch Planks and 4 Sticks, then place it in a gap between two Birch Fence sections. Right-click the gate to open and close it like a door.

  5. 5

    Use leashes and fireproofing tips

Attach a lead to a Birch Fence post to tether horses, mules, or boats nearby. Since Birch Fence is flammable, surround fire sources with a one-block buffer of dirt or stone to prevent the fence from catching fire.

Tip

Birch Fence blends well with light-colored builds. Pair it with Birch Fence Gates for a matching enclosure, and add torches or lanterns on fence posts for decoration and mob prevention.

Frequently asked questions

What materials are needed to craft a Birch Fence?

Crafting a Birch Fence requires 4 Birch Planks and 2 Sticks arranged in a 3×2 pattern on a Crafting Table: Birch Planks fill columns 1 and 3 in both rows, and Sticks fill column 2. One recipe yields 3 Birch Fence sections.

Can mobs jump over a Birch Fence?

Mobs treat a Birch Fence as a full block in height, which means most passive and hostile mobs cannot jump over a Birch Fence perimeter. Players, however, can step over a Birch Fence from the top of an adjacent stair block because the fence hitbox is 1.5 blocks tall for the player.

Does a Birch Fence catch fire?

Yes, Birch Fence is a wooden block and can catch fire from adjacent flames, lava, or fire propagation. To protect a Birch Fence enclosure near campfires or lit areas, place at least one block of non-flammable material such as dirt or stone between the fire source and the fence.

Can you attach a leash to a Birch Fence?

Yes, a lead can be tied to any Birch Fence post, allowing players to tether horses, mules, donkeys, llamas, and boats to the fence. Multiple animals can be tethered to a single Birch Fence section.

Which fence gate pairs with a Birch Fence?

The Birch Fence Gate is the intended companion block. Craft a Birch Fence Gate from 2 Birch Planks and 4 Sticks, then place it in a gap between two Birch Fence sections. The gate opens and closes with a right-click and can also be toggled by a Redstone signal.

How is a Birch Fence different from other wooden fences?

All wooden fences in Minecraft share the same dimensions and collision rules, but the Birch Fence uses the pale, light-colored texture of Birch Planks. Birch Fence sections only connect to other Birch Fence sections, Birch Fence Gates, and solid blocks — not to fences of other wood types.
