Description

Bell generates naturally at the meeting points of villages — typically the central plaza around which villager workstations cluster — and acts as the village's coordination centre. The block can also be obtained from raid-trophy drops or, in Bedrock edition, from specific structure loot. There is no standard crafting recipe in vanilla; players who want extras must hunt down naturally-generated copies and recover the block with silk touch or matching pickaxe tier.

Right-clicking the block plays a deep ringing sound that propagates outward several blocks, alerting all villagers within range. During a raid, the alert causes villagers to panic and retreat into nearby houses for safety, sometimes preventing kills that would otherwise occur. The block is also redstone-activatable — a button or pressure plate triggers the same ring without requiring direct interaction. Visually it hangs from a curved iron frame and chimes physically when struck, swinging on the frame for a few seconds after each ring. Builders use it as a centrepiece for medieval town squares and watchtower flag points.

How to use a Bell in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Obtain a bell

Bells have no crafting recipe — mine one from a village meeting point with any pickaxe. Mined without a pickaxe, the bell drops nothing.

  2. 2

    Place and orient it

Place the bell on the floor between two posts, hang it from a ceiling, or attach it to one or two walls. The attachment chosen sets the direction it swings.

  3. 3

    Ring the bell

Right-click the bell, hit it with a projectile such as an arrow or trident, or feed it a redstone pulse from a button or pressure plate.

  4. 4

    Use it during a raid

Ring the bell while a raid is active to outline every illager within 32 blocks. The glowing effect lasts about 3 seconds so you can track raiders through walls.

Edition difference

The glowing-outline raid effect is Java Edition behavior. Ringing still sends nearby villagers home to their beds in both Java and Bedrock editions.
