Description

Basalt generates naturally in two forms: tall columnar spires throughout the soul sand valley biome and as the almost exclusive fill material of basalt delta biomes. Regular basalt has a rough striated texture; the polished variant offers smooth cylindrical surfaces resembling marble columns, popular in nether-themed builds.

Ghast fireballs cannot ignite or destroy it, unlike most nether materials that char or explode on impact. It cannot be crafted or found in loot chests — the only renewable source is a dedicated generator build: a lava source block adjacent to soul soil beneath a blue ice block, which produces new columns indefinitely as lava flows over the soul soil below it.

The polished form is obtained by stonecutting the rough variant or smelting it in a furnace, giving two distinct finishes from one raw block. Both variants share the same blast resistance value, making either suitable for blast-proof structures in hostile nether environments.
