Description

Bamboo Stairs are a stair block that lets players and mobs climb one block of height without jumping. Six Bamboo Planks in a staircase pattern on a Crafting Table produce four Bamboo Stairs, and the recipe also works mirrored. Bamboo Stairs stack to 64, count as a renewable block, and have been available in Java Edition without an experimental data pack since 1.20.

Bamboo Stairs have hardness 2 and blast resistance 3, and the axe is the fastest breaking tool although any tool works. Bamboo Stairs burn, catch fire from lava, and serve as furnace fuel that smelts 1.5 items per block.

Guide

How to place and use Bamboo Stairs in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft four stairs

Six Bamboo Planks arranged on a Crafting Table in a staircase shape of one, two, and three planks per row make four Bamboo Stairs, and the mirrored shape works too.

  2. 2

    Place right side up

Bamboo Stairs placed against the top of a block or the lower half of a block's side stand right side up.

  3. 3

    Place upside-down

Bamboo Stairs placed against the bottom of a block or the upper half of a block's side hang upside-down.

  4. 4

    Join stairs into corners

Bamboo Stairs join adjacent stairs of any material into inner and outer corners, but right-side-up stairs never join upside-down stairs.

  5. 5

    Break with an axe

An axe breaks Bamboo Stairs fastest, and broken Bamboo Stairs drop as an item.

Light through stairs

In Java Edition, the full-block faces of Bamboo Stairs block light, and the stepped gaps let light through.

Frequently asked questions

Can Bamboo Stairs be made at a Stonecutter?

No. A Stonecutter makes stone, brick, quartz, copper, and concrete stairs, but not bamboo, wooden, or wool stairs, so Bamboo Stairs are crafted on a Crafting Table.

Which Minecraft version added Bamboo Stairs?

Bamboo Stairs became available in Java Edition 1.20 and in Bedrock Edition 1.20.0. Before those versions, Bamboo Stairs existed only behind an experimental data pack in Java Edition and an experimental toggle in Bedrock Edition.

Can Bamboo Stairs be waterlogged?

Yes. Bamboo Stairs are waterloggable, so water and the stairs occupy the same space.

Does walking up Bamboo Stairs make the player hungry?

No. Walking up Bamboo Stairs costs no exhaustion from the hunger bar, while each jump costs 0.2 exhaustion.

How do Bamboo Stairs differ from Bamboo Mosaic Stairs?

Bamboo Mosaic Stairs are a separate block crafted from Bamboo Mosaic instead of Bamboo Planks, and both recipes turn six blocks into four stairs.
