Description

White Candle is a warm-white decorative light block crafted from 1 Candle and 1 White Dye in Minecraft, added in Java Edition 1.17 and Bedrock Edition 1.17.10. Up to four White Candles stack on a single block, raising the light level in steps of 3 — one candle emits level 3, two emit 6, three emit 9, and four emit 12. White Candle is lit with flint and steel, a fire charge, or a flaming projectile, and is extinguished by player interaction, water, a water bottle (Java only), or wind charges.

White Candle is renewable, because the base Candle is crafted from string and honeycomb and White Dye comes from bone meal or lily of the valley. The neutral ivory tone of White Candle blends into chapels, wedding chapels, modern interiors, and snowy builds where a colored candle would clash. White Candle is not flammable and survives lava contact, has hardness and blast resistance of only 0.1, breaks instantly with any tool, and can be waterlogged — but a waterlogged White Candle cannot be ignited. White Candle also sits on an uneaten cake to form a candle cake that works as a single, dim light source.

Minecraft White Candle Guide

How to craft and use White Candle in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the White Candle

Place 1 Candle and 1 White Dye anywhere in the crafting grid to make 1 White Candle — the recipe is shapeless.

  2. 2

Place 1 to 4 White Candles

Right-click the same block space to add up to four White Candles, choosing light level 3, 6, 9, or 12.

  3. 3

    Light the White Candle

Use flint and steel, a fire charge, or a flaming projectile on White Candle; in Bedrock Edition a Fire Aspect sword also lights White Candle.

  4. 4

    Extinguish when needed

Right-click the lit White Candle, splash water on White Candle, throw a wind charge, or use a water bottle (Java only) to put White Candle out.

Placement note

White Candle is too dim to replace torches for full mob spawn prevention, and a waterlogged White Candle cannot be ignited until White Candle is dry.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft White Candle in Minecraft?

White Candle is crafted by combining 1 Candle and 1 White Dye in any slot of the crafting grid — the recipe is shapeless and yields 1 White Candle.

How bright is White Candle?

White Candle emits light level 3 for one candle, 6 for two, 9 for three, and 12 for four White Candles stacked on the same block.

Is White Candle renewable?

Yes. White Candle is renewable because the base Candle is made from string and honeycomb, and White Dye is made from bone meal or lily of the valley.

Can White Candle go on a cake?

Yes. Using White Candle on an uneaten cake creates a candle cake that acts as a single dim light source, and the White Candle drops when the cake is eaten or broken.

Does White Candle burn or get destroyed by lava?

No. White Candle is not flammable and does not catch fire from lava, although White Candle has only 0.1 blast resistance and breaks instantly.
