How to Make Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod in Minecraft

Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod — Minecraft block

Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod

Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod diverts natural lightning strikes and stays in its green weathered stage, because honeycomb wax stops copper from oxidizing (changing color) further.

Description

Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod is a copper rod at the third of four oxidation stages (the copper slowly changes color), sealed with honeycomb wax so lightning strikes no longer change that stage. Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod is crafted by combining one Weathered Lightning Rod with one Honeycomb, and Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod first appeared in Java Edition 1.21.9 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.111. The weathered stage looks green with brown spots.

Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod diverts natural lightning within a sphere of 128 blocks in Java Edition and 64 blocks in Bedrock Edition, but only while no block stands above the rod: Java Edition allows nothing but air there, while Bedrock Edition allows blocks without a collision box. A strike makes Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod emit a redstone signal at level 15 for 8 game ticks (0.4 seconds) and strongly power the block that holds the rod. On a rod without wax, each strike also lowers the oxidation, while Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod keeps its stage. Flammable blocks belong farther away, because in Java Edition lightning can set fire to blocks within 2 blocks around the air above the rod.

Guide

How to craft and use a Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the rod

A Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod comes from combining one Weathered Lightning Rod with one Honeycomb in any crafting grid.

  2. 2

    Place it on top

Waxed Weathered Lightning Rod must be the highest block in its column. In Java Edition only air may sit above the rod; in Bedrock Edition blocks without a collision box are allowed.

  3. 3

    Connect redstone

A redstone component touching the block that holds the rod receives a level 15 pulse for 8 game ticks (1 tick is 1/20 of a second) after each strike.

  4. 4

    Remove the wax

Any axe scrapes the wax off the rod, and a Honeycomb seals the rod with wax again.

Tip

A Trident with Channeling hits the rod during a thunderstorm only when the blocks above the rod are fully transparent. Lightning from a Channeling Trident thrown at an entity and lightning summoned by commands is never diverted.
