Description

Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod is a copper lightning rod frozen at the exposed oxidation stage — the state where the metal shows its first green spots — and sealed with a Honeycomb so the weathering stops for good. Players craft one Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod by combining one Exposed Lightning Rod with one Honeycomb on the crafting grid, or by using a Honeycomb directly on a placed Exposed Lightning Rod. Like every lightning rod, Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod must be mined with a stone pickaxe or better, or the block drops nothing.

Placed as the highest block of a column, Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod pulls natural lightning strikes away from a spherical area of 128 blocks in Java Edition and 64 blocks in Bedrock Edition, and every hit fires a redstone pulse of signal strength 15 for 8 game ticks (0.4 seconds) into the block the rod is attached to. The wax freezes only the look: lightning that would peel one oxidation stage from a non-waxed rod leaves the waxed surface untouched, and an axe stays the only tool that scrapes the wax away. Builders mount Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod on copper roofs and spires for a green-spotted shade that never fades to the next oxidation stage while the strike protection keeps working.

Guide

How to craft and use Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod in Minecraft

  1. 1

Craft a Lightning Rod and let it oxidize

Craft a Lightning Rod from three Copper Ingots set in a vertical column, then wait until the copper reaches the exposed stage with its first green spots.

  2. 2

Wax the rod with a Honeycomb

Combine one Exposed Lightning Rod with one Honeycomb anywhere on the crafting grid, or use a Honeycomb directly on the placed block; both ways turn the rod into Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod.

  3. 3

Place the rod as the highest block

Mount Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod on a roof or spire so no block stands above it, because in Java Edition any block above the rod stops the lightning diversion.

  4. 4

    Wire the redstone pulse

Run redstone from the block the rod is attached to: every lightning strike fires a pulse of signal strength 15 for 8 game ticks (0.4 seconds).

  5. 5

Mine with a stone pickaxe, unwax with an axe

Break Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod with a stone pickaxe or better — a weaker tool drops nothing — and scrape the wax off with an axe only when the unwaxed look is wanted.

Fire safety around the rod

A diverted lightning bolt can ignite flammable blocks within a two-block radius sphere centered on the air block above Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod; the rod itself and its base block never catch fire.

Frequently asked questions

Does the honeycomb wax stop further oxidation?

Yes. Honeycomb wax freezes the exposed stage permanently, so the green-spotted copper never advances to the weathered or oxidized stage.

Can a lightning strike remove the wax or reset the oxidation?

No. Lightning reduces oxidation only on non-waxed rods, and only an axe scrapes wax off.

Which versions added Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod?

Java Edition 1.21.9 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.111 introduced the oxidizing, waxable lightning rod variants.

Does Waxed Exposed Lightning Rod need grounding?

No. A Minecraft lightning rod requires no direct connection to the ground, unlike a real-life lightning rod.
