Description

Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern is the waxed form of an exposed copper lantern, a copper-family light source with a green flame that Minecraft added in Java Edition 1.21.9 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.111. Copper lanterns age through four oxidation stages, and the exposed stage discolors the metal while green spots begin to appear. One honeycomb stops the aging, so Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern keeps that green-spotted look permanently and still emits the maximum light level of 15; unlike a copper bulb, a copper lantern loses no brightness at any oxidation stage.

Each Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern is crafted by combining one Exposed Copper Lantern with one honeycomb — in the crafting grid, or by using a honeycomb on the placed unwaxed lantern once it reaches the exposed stage. The finished lantern stands on top of most solid blocks or hangs from their undersides. The frozen green patina makes Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern a deliberate choice for aged-looking builds that still need full brightness.

Guide

How to craft a Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the base Copper Lantern

Fill the eight outer cells of the 3×3 crafting grid with Copper Nuggets and put one Copper Torch in the center cell. The shaped recipe yields one plain Copper Lantern.

  2. 2

    Wait for the exposed stage

Place the unwaxed Copper Lantern in the world and give the copper time. Oxidation carries the lantern through its stages, and the exposed stage discolors the metal and grows green spots.

  3. 3

    Wax the Exposed Copper Lantern

Combine the Exposed Copper Lantern with one honeycomb in the crafting grid, or use a honeycomb directly on the placed lantern. One honeycomb converts one lantern into a Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern.

  4. 4

Place or hang the finished lantern

Aim at a block's top face to stand the Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern on it, or aim at a bottom face to hang the lantern underneath. A few blocks only accept the lantern while sneaking.

  5. 5

    Relocate the lantern freely

Break the Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern with any tool when the layout changes; a pickaxe works fastest, and the lantern drops itself for reuse.

Oxidation is reversible on unwaxed lanterns

An axe or a lightning bolt removes oxidation on copper lanterns, so an unwaxed lantern that aged past the exposed stage can be cleaned instead of replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern melt snow and ice?

Yes. Copper lanterns melt snow layers within 2 blocks and ice within 3 blocks, measured in taxicab distance.

Can a Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern be placed underwater?

Yes. Copper lanterns are waterloggable, so a Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern can occupy a block that already contains water.

Can fire or lava destroy a Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern?

No. The Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern is not flammable, and lava does not destroy the lantern.

What breaks a Waxed Exposed Copper Lantern besides mining?

A piston pushing a block into the lantern's space, or the loss of the supporting block, breaks the lantern and makes it drop itself. A copper lantern sitting on an invalid surface pops off the same way on the next block update.
