Description

Waxed Exposed Copper Chain is the honeycomb-waxed form of Exposed Copper Chain, a directional decorative block from the copper chain family added in Minecraft Java 1.21.9 and Bedrock 1.21.111. Unwaxed copper chains oxidize on their own: random ticks (automatic game updates) carry the metal through four stages — unoxidized, exposed, weathered, oxidized — and at the exposed stage the copper gets discolored with green spots. Waxing stops the process completely: combine 1 Exposed Copper Chain with 1 Honeycomb on the crafting table, or use a honeycomb directly on the placed chain, and the result keeps the exposed look forever.

Any pickaxe of wooden tier or higher breaks Waxed Exposed Copper Chain, and mining without a pickaxe drops nothing. The chain stacks to 64, is transparent, and neither burns nor is destroyed by lava. An axe turns Waxed Exposed Copper Chain back into Exposed Copper Chain without returning the honeycomb, and further axe uses scrape off one oxidation layer at a time. Copper chains share much of their functionality with iron chains and are directional blocks.

Guide

How to get Waxed Exposed Copper Chain in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft a copper chain

Place 1 Copper Ingot between 2 Copper Nuggets in a vertical column on the crafting grid; the recipe yields 1 Copper Chain.

  2. 2

Let the chain oxidize to exposed

Place the copper chain in the world and wait: random ticks carry copper chains through the oxidation stages, and at the exposed stage the metal shows discoloration with green spots.

  3. 3

    Wax the exposed chain

Combine 1 Exposed Copper Chain with 1 Honeycomb on the crafting table, or use a honeycomb directly on the placed chain; the result is 1 Waxed Exposed Copper Chain that never oxidizes further.

  4. 4

Mine the result with a pickaxe

Break Waxed Exposed Copper Chain with any pickaxe of wooden tier or higher; breaking the chain without a pickaxe drops nothing.

Speeding up oxidation

In Java Edition, groups of non-waxed copper blocks oxidize far more slowly than single blocks spaced at least 4 blocks apart, so place copper chains apart while waiting for the exposed stage.

Frequently asked questions

Does rain or water speed up oxidation on Waxed Exposed Copper Chain?

No. Copper oxidation relies only on random ticks, and rain or water does not accelerate it. Waxed Exposed Copper Chain never oxidizes further at all, because the honeycomb wax locks the exposed stage permanently.

Can fire or lava destroy Waxed Exposed Copper Chain?

No. Copper chains are not flammable and not susceptible to lava, so neither fire nor lava destroys Waxed Exposed Copper Chain.

Can Waxed Exposed Copper Chain be placed underwater?

Yes. Copper chains are waterloggable, meaning Waxed Exposed Copper Chain can hold water inside while standing in a lake or ocean.

Can copper chains craft hanging signs?

No. The ability to craft hanging signs from copper chains was removed in snapshot 25w35a, before copper chains shipped in release 1.21.9.

Does the wax change how the copper chain looks?

No. Waxed blocks use exactly the same texture as unwaxed blocks, so Waxed Exposed Copper Chain looks identical to Exposed Copper Chain; the wax only stops further oxidation.
