How to use a Squid Spawn Egg in Minecraft
-
1
Get the egg
Open the Creative inventory and search "squid", or run /give @s minecraft:squid_spawn_egg in any mode with cheats enabled.
-
2
Find or place water
Stand next to a water source block such as an ocean, river, or a placed water bucket. Squid need water to survive.
-
3
Right-click the water
Aim at the water and use the egg (right-click / left trigger). A squid spawns at that spot.
-
4
Farm ink sacs
Kill the squid to collect 1–3 Ink Sacs, which craft into black dye for wool, beds, and banners.
Spawn eggs are not available in Survival without commands. Using the egg on dry land does nothing because squid despawn instantly out of water.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft a Squid Spawn Egg?
No. Squid Spawn Egg cannot be crafted. It is only available in the Creative inventory or through the /give command.
How do you get a Squid Spawn Egg in Survival?
You can't obtain it legitimately in Survival. Spawn eggs are Creative-only items unless cheats let you run /give.
Why won't my Squid Spawn Egg work?
Squid only spawn in water. If you use the egg on dry land the squid despawns immediately, so aim at a water source block.
Does the Squid Spawn Egg work in Java and Bedrock?
Yes. It behaves the same in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition and spawns a standard squid that drops 1–3 Ink Sacs.
