Description

Cod Spawn Egg is a Creative-mode item that spawns a single cod — Minecraft's most common passive ocean fish — the moment a player uses it on a block surface. Cod Spawn Egg was added in Java Edition 1.13, the Update Aquatic, alongside the cod mob itself, and also exists in Bedrock Edition. Cod Spawn Egg cannot be crafted, mined, or found in Survival mode; it is available only from the Creative inventory or the /give command (minecraft:cod_spawn_egg). The egg uses the standard spawn-egg shape with a pale tan base and light grey speckles that echo the cod's own coloring.

Players use Cod Spawn Egg to populate aquariums, decorative ponds, and ocean-themed builds without waiting for cod to generate naturally in warm and cold ocean biomes. A cod spawned from the egg swims in water, suffocates on land, and drops 1 raw cod when killed, plus a 5% chance of bone meal in Java Edition. Map-makers rely on Cod Spawn Egg to place fish exactly where an adventure map needs them, and Bedrock players can load the egg into a dispenser to spawn cod automatically with redstone. For Survival food farming, catching cod with a fishing rod stays the only renewable route, since Cod Spawn Egg remains Creative-exclusive.

How to use a Cod Spawn Egg in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Get the spawn egg

Switch to Creative mode and search 'Cod Spawn Egg' in the inventory, or run /give @s minecraft:cod_spawn_egg in any mode with cheats on.

  2. 2

    Aim at water

Point the crosshair at a water block, or at a solid surface right next to water, so the cod lands where it can swim.

  3. 3

    Use the egg

Right-click (use item) to spawn one cod; each use spawns another fish and consumes nothing in Creative mode.

  4. 4

    Contain the fish

Enclose the spot with glass or other blocks so the cod stays inside your aquarium and does not beach itself on dry land.

Important

Cod need water to survive — a cod left on land flops and suffocates within a few seconds, so always spawn it into or beside water.
