How to use a Spider Eye in Minecraft
-
1
Collect spider eyes
Fight spiders and cave spiders at night or in caves; each kill may drop a spider eye, and a sword with Looting increases the yield.
-
2
Brew an Awkward Potion
Place a Nether wart with water bottles in a brewing stand to make the Awkward Potion base needed for poison.
-
3
Add the spider eye
Put the spider eye in the top slot of the brewing stand to turn the Awkward Potion into a Potion of Poison.
-
4
Craft a fermented spider eye
Combine the spider eye with sugar and a brown mushroom in the crafting grid to make a fermented spider eye for corrupting potions.
Eating a spider eye restores 2 hunger but applies Poison for 4 seconds; never eat one at low health, since Poison can drop you to half a heart.

Frequently asked questions
Can you eat a spider eye?
Yes, but it restores only 2 hunger points and poisons you for 4 seconds, so it is risky emergency food.
How do you get spider eyes?
Spiders and cave spiders drop 0–1 spider eye on death, and witches can also drop them; the Looting enchantment raises the chance.
What potion uses a spider eye?
Brewing a spider eye into an Awkward Potion creates a Potion of Poison.
Is a spider eye the same as a fermented spider eye?
No. A fermented spider eye is crafted from a spider eye, sugar, and a brown mushroom, and it corrupts potions instead of poisoning.
Does a spider eye work the same in Bedrock?
Yes, a spider eye behaves identically in Java and Bedrock Edition.
