Description

Spawner generates exclusively in pre-built structures — dungeons (zombie, skeleton, spider), abandoned mineshafts (cave spider), Nether fortresses (blaze), and woodland mansions (vex). The texture is a black metal cage with a tiny rotating mob figure inside, indicating which entity it produces. The device cannot be crafted and cannot be obtained even with Silk Touch — mining always destroys it permanently.

When a player is within sixteen blocks, the device attempts to spawn its mob every ten to forty seconds, up to a cap of six entities in the immediate area. The spawn requires the same conditions the mob normally needs (light level, space) which is why most XP-grinder farms surround the spawner with darkness and water columns to channel mobs into a kill zone. The block also drops zero experience when destroyed, making preservation crucial — once gone, it cannot be replaced. Some servers use commands to change the mob inside, but in vanilla survival the entity is locked at world generation.

How to use a Monster Spawner in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a spawner

Locate a spawner inside a dungeon, abandoned mineshaft, Nether fortress, or woodland mansion; the cage glows faintly and shows a spinning mini-mob that reveals which entity it produces.

  2. 2

    Light the area first

Place torches on and around the cage so it stops spawning mobs while you build, since the device only activates in darkness within sixteen blocks of a player.

  3. 3

    Build a collection room

Dig a 9x9x3 room centred on the spawner so mobs have space to appear inside the four-block activation radius.

  4. 4

    Channel and finish mobs

Use water streams to push spawned mobs into a one-block drop or kill chamber where you can finish them for XP and drops.

Important

Never mine the spawner — it drops nothing and cannot be replaced in survival. Java spawners need light level 0, while Bedrock allows up to light 7, so darken the room fully on both editions.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a spawner?

No, a spawner cannot be crafted; it only generates naturally in dungeons, abandoned mineshafts, Nether fortresses, and woodland mansions.

Can you mine a spawner with Silk Touch?

No. In vanilla survival a spawner always breaks into nothing, even with Silk Touch, so it cannot be moved or kept.

How do you stop a spawner from spawning mobs?

Place torches or any light source on and around it; spawners only activate in darkness within sixteen blocks of a player.

Can you change the mob inside a spawner?

Not in survival — the mob is fixed at world generation. On servers or in Creative, a spawn egg or command can change it.

Does a spawner drop experience when broken?

No, breaking a spawner gives zero XP; its value comes from the mobs it spawns, not from destroying the block.
