Redstone Ore
Redstone Ore drops the dust that powers every circuit, trap, and mechanism in Minecraft.
Description
Mining one block drops four to five redstone dust, with extra drops under Fortune. Dust is the lifeblood of every circuit in the game — it conducts power, transmits signals, and combines into repeaters, comparators, observers, dispensers, droppers, pistons, and clocks. Nine dust compress into a redstone block, which conducts a permanent signal and is also used for crafting. Silk Touch returns the ore as-is, useful for collectors who want the glowing block intact.
Guide
How to find and mine Redstone Ore in Minecraft
-
1
Locate the right depth
Redstone Ore generates between y=−64 and y=15 in the Overworld. Press F3 to open the debug screen and watch the Y coordinate. Descend to around y=−59, where Redstone Ore reaches peak density and veins are most frequent.
-
2
Dig down safely
Never dig straight down — lava pools and caves are common below y=−30. Use a staircase or spiral descent. Bring at least a full stack of torches and a water bucket to neutralize lava. Redstone Ore often sits beside lava lakes at low Y levels.

3
Mine with the correct tool
Redstone Ore requires an iron pickaxe or better. A wooden or stone pickaxe destroys the block without dropping anything. Enchant the pickaxe with Fortune III to receive up to 8 redstone dust per ore instead of the base 4–5. Use Silk Touch to collect the glowing ore block itself.

Use the redstone dust
Each Redstone Ore block mined yields 4–5 redstone dust. Dust is the foundation of Minecraft automation: place it as wire on the ground to carry signals, or craft it into repeaters, comparators, observers, dispensers, droppers, and pistons. Nine dust also craft into a redstone block for compact, always-on power.
Fortune III maximizes redstone dust yield — up to 8 per ore — and is the best choice when building large redstone projects. Silk Touch collects the Redstone Ore block intact (glowing and particle-emitting), which is useful for display builds or mob farms that rely on the light-triggering property. A pickaxe cannot have both enchantments at the same time, so pick based on your current goal.

Frequently asked questions
What tool is required to mine Redstone Ore?
Redstone Ore requires at least an iron pickaxe to drop redstone dust. A wooden or stone pickaxe breaks the block without yielding any drops. Diamond and netherite pickaxes also work and mine Redstone Ore faster.
How many redstone dust does one Redstone Ore block drop?
One Redstone Ore block drops 4–5 redstone dust by default. With Fortune I the range becomes 4–6, with Fortune II it becomes 4–7, and with Fortune III Redstone Ore can drop up to 8 redstone dust per block.
Why does Redstone Ore glow when walked on?
Redstone Ore activates when a player or mob steps on it, interacts with it, or a piston pushes it — emitting red particles and a brief light level of 9. This is a purely visual mechanic in Minecraft. The activated state lasts a short time and the ore can be used as a dim, temporary light source.
What is the difference between Redstone Ore and Deepslate Redstone Ore?
Deepslate Redstone Ore generates exclusively below y=0 where deepslate replaces stone. Redstone Ore drops the same amount of redstone dust as its deepslate counterpart, but Deepslate Redstone Ore takes longer to mine because deepslate is harder than regular stone. Both variants require an iron pickaxe or better.
